Found this one that I might be able to pick up, is it possible to add a swivel base to this model?

If that is a 4", swivel base assy's are all interchangable for the 4" 4 1/2" & 5" New about $100. Used? Good luck.

Mr. Wilton, if you have all your pieces, why not braze it back together?

I don't have the missing chuck from the broken static jaw. Actually, the vise worked perfect with the cracks and the jaws even lined up good so I thought about JB weld (or brazing). However, I was planning on this as a gift for a family member so I kinda want it to be without repairs. Good suggestion though.

That is a shame. A piece could be fitted but it is going beyond "worthwhile", since it may have to be rebored.
Not that any of us has ever done anything that wasn't worthwhile .....

Hey write2dgray, That foot vise looks like a different manufacturer or a later model than the one on page 135 of this thread, I'd say Swingit got the better deal at $42.50.

Swingit; If you're still looking for info on your Wells Brothers and Co. "Foot Vise and Bolt Header No. 1" , an 1895 catalog of their entire line of tools was put on VintageMachinery.org in May of 2012. Your vise is on page 93 (page 95 on the pdf).

The vise is used for "forming, sharpening and welding calks on horse and ox shoes, for making bolt heads, and takes the place of an ordinary vise for bending and shaping hot iron, thus combining two machines in one" according to their description.

Actually the whole catalog is pretty cool with 122 pages of illustrations (technology to do printed photographs cheaply wasn't around yet) of taps and dies, bolt cutters/nut tapper machines. bit braces, drilling machines (with carriage wheel holder), lathes and drill bits and "Little giant ratchet nut wrenches".

As i said a few posts ago, i had some killer vises coming and pics will follow.

Feast your eyes on this pile of metal clamping goodness!!

The Wilton is a 1980 and is as smooth as can be. Its all original complete with the original water transfer decal.

The Reed is in great shape with only minor dings and scratches.

I can't say how much the Wilton was since its gonna get sold but the Reed set me back a whopping 65.00 and came with a bunch of other tools i posted in the garage sale thread.

Beautiful vises! I need a 2C &3C to round out my Reed combination vises. I see yours has the early ball, and forge welded jaws.

Thanks

It's my first Reed combo vise. I've found other Reeds and Craftsman branded Reeds but never one of these. It was found on CL and it took a week of calls/emails to get the guy focused and sell me the vise.

It was well worth the effort

Here is my contribution to this great thread. This is my family of vises. Some have a history some have soaked for hours in vinegar. If you notice the custom lock downs on the york and the fence cap on the back of the wilton, those are my custom touches to replace abused or lost parts.

Wilton 450s paid $50
Wilton 1745 paid $100
York 4" paid $35
Duracraft 4" vise paid $15

Bought the 1745 right here on GJ.

first is a near perfect Reed 204 wearing origional rust, and a great Jacobson.
Anyone have information on the Jacobson?

Finally got my two vises together. Before/after pics for you (I do have the clamp downs for the Wilton, but I ordered the wrong size/thread pitch so I have to drill/tap them).

First the Charles Parker 434 1/2

That Reed is a nice one! The Jacobsen is interesting. I need to ask my neighbor more details, but he is an old retired truck driver, and said he used to occasionally haul a load of scrap vise parts out of somewhere in the Warren region. He didn't remember the name, but he used to root around in the parts and find enough to put a vise together on occasion. He gave them all away years ago though, but his son in law may still have one. I am curious how they are marked.

Delayed cross post from the garage sale thread.

Chas Parker 29X for $25. Yeah, it's not perfect. The slide is damaged and one side has grind marks on it, but I'm fine with it. I still have to get pics of the Littlestown vise that's been in the basement for as long as I can remember. Not sure if it was my dad's or if it was left here by the previous home owners.

Not mine, belongs to the USS Torsk museum in Baltimore, that I volunteered on the other day. Vise is a 4-1/2" Rock Island, looks very heavy. I think is was marked "535" or "585" as a model number....

Very nice colletion of vises..

Would you mind showing a pic of the Rock Island 577 swivel release handle? Mine is missing and I would like to get an idea of what an original looks like...Thanks
