I always see all of the good deals people post about at rummage sales and auctions, however, there never seems to be anything good in my area at rummage sales, and auctions are normally during the day, which ***** when you work during the day.

However, yesterday as I was heading home for lunch there was an auction on my block. I stopped to check out what was available, there some decent stuff, nothing to write home about, but there was some Bonney service wrenches that I wanted. I asked how long until they thought they would auction them off, they said like 45 minutes... I headed home ate and came back. They were auctioning off the table that had the wrenches, **** I must have missed them. Figured I would hang around to see what some of the portable toolboxes would go for. They open one up and pull out the Bonney wrenches, ****! I figured that the price was going to be higher now that they were included in a big toolbox. Low and behold, I got the entire box for $17.50!!! The guy didn't really show everything that was in the box, when I got it home there was more than I thought in there. =) I also picked up 6 assorted hammers for $2.00.

So here is a picture of the entire lot of what I got for $20. (click for larger image)

Proto 1-1/4" deep impact socket
Williams deep offset box end wrench
Cman 1/2" SAE socket set
2 leather hammers (my buddies favorite)
not shown is the Cman toolbox, which is decent....

Included was this Blackhawk Freewheel Ratchet, freewheel ratchets are new to me, so I found it interesting... what is the story behind these? No branding on the 3/8" flex-head ratchet, but I counted ~42 teeth when spinning it. The 1/2" Cman round head at ~72 teeth, and is pretty smooth. The no-name stubby 1/2" flex-head ratchet is missing the retention-ball which holds the handle into place, so it just flops around.



I left happy with my purchases...

Man, I think you paid too much, LOLOLOL!!! Great deal, those stickers on the bonney wrenches are just too cool! Hell, just the Ridgid monkey wrench alone cost more then $20!!! See why I am addicted to cheap deals; how can you refuse buying this stuff at these prices?

OMG! The Bonney tappet wrenches are like NOS! I have bought many out in the wild used and abused, never seen a set that complete, or in that kind of shape, they look as though they were kept under the bed! Very nicely done indeed!

Once I saw the Bonney's in the toolbox I figured I would have to pay at least $50 for the whole thing, and I was pretty much willing to do so... so you could image the silence as the auctioneer kept asking for $20, $20, $20, $20... and the looks of the other people when I bid $17.50, like I was a big spender... LOL.

One of those Blackhawk freewheeling ratchets sold for just shy of $50 in the Bay of Fleas today. Ditto the good haul comments, wouldn't mind those Bonney's myself.

^^^ I didn't need a lot of it, but I use tools in several different locations, so filling up a couple tool cabinets is OK with me... =)

I figured it would bring some decent money if the concept worked... as long as it holds some torque it seems like a great ratchet! Not only did a get a great deal, I learned something new.:thumbup:

Someone please explain why that Blackhawk ratchet is called "freewheeling"?

Because it doesn't sounds like it has any teeth in the ratcheting mechanism, you can move it to any position in the 360° range of motion. A typical 72 tooth ratchet would only have 5° increments (360° divided by 72 teeth).

Any idea what brand 3/8" flex ratchet or 1/2" flex ratchet are? I'll try to get some more pictures tonight.

You hit the jackpot with those Bonney wrenches!!!!! Those are worth good $$$ on ebay. I collect old Bonney tools and have never seen a set in that condition---heck, I've never seen a set of that age at all !!!! They would go for $50 in a second, wouldn't be surprised to see over $100 and not shocked to see some crazy price. Although I have noticed that prices on old tools on ebay have dropped some---I'm guessing due to the economy, collectibles are a luxury.
Do they have the CV in a circle logo somewhere on them? If they do they are not any newer then 1939. From the Bonney shield logo that would appear to date them no later then 1933 and the code which I can barely make out (it's to the right of the sticker--forged into the wrench) it looks like an OX? The X would = 1932---the O wouldn't make sense so maybe it's a D? Bonney used A-L for month codes and M-Z for the years. Alloy Artifacts website has an excellent breakdown.

Do the no-name ratchets have a country of origin on them? The 3/8 looks like an import, the handle doesn't look familiar to me.

Are you sure about the dates Bonney used the shield because they still used it well into the 40's when they were partnered with Gray tools here in Canada.

BTW nice haul for $20,

They do have a CV in the circle. Not all of the wrenches are in as good as shape as the one posted. There are a couple that are missing the stickers and they have some surface rust on them. I'm going to search around on the forum to get some ideas of how to clean them up.

Wire wheel on the bench grinder does the best job. :thumbup:

After looking that the Ally Artifacts article I'm going to have to explore this a little more to find the stamped date code, I do remember seeing something at the position on the wrench, just didn't make note of it at the time.

What I do remember is that it is Tool Kit No. 412, and the wrenches are stamped 402, 403, 404, and 405 (2 of each).:beer:
