Can you tell me about this compressor?

Just scored a what I think is a nice compressor from a job site. Doing some office expansion for a factory in Cicero IL. They haven't used it in years since the whole factory went on "factory air". The guy said it worked last they used it?

Anyways, is this a good compressor? What should I do before I run it? I'm sure drain and change the oil, but what else?

Check the oil in the pump and check that the filter is still in good shape and has not disintegrated. Drain the tank of water and look around the bottom for any signs of rust that would weaken the tank.

You also may want to turn the pump a few revolutions by hand. In addition, check the safety valve to ensure is isn't stuck closed.

Change the oil and give it a try. If it runs with no problems, enjoy it.

But, I can tell you that is not a 6hp motor. It is about a 3hp. CH loves to do false advertising.

This unit was made prior to the new regulations regarding hp ratings on compressors.
This unit looks to be about 2-3 hp.

As others have said, from the PSI and the pump size, it's really more like a 3HP unit. Don't feel bad, my Craftsman (also got as a freebie) says the same thing but puts out about the same CFM. It's a good garage compressor though, plenty of air for random usage...

I've seen that pump before on Husky compressors... As has been said, change the oil. But also CHECK THE BOLTS that hold down the compressor to the tank. I've seen a couple units where they have worked themselves loose and you get a wicked rattle... If you have some loctite I would recommend using it, or get some nuts with the nylon locking rings.

Once it builds up pressure, try draining the tank and see how much **** comes out of it. Before you wire it up and everything you might want to take the time to pipe in a ball-valve style drain... Makes like much easier.

CH used what is called "maximum 'developed' horsepower. That is the theoretic horsepower that the motor should put out before it stalls and burns up. Once it is burned up, you lose. Nobody cares what that number WAS on their burned out motor.

The only horsepower rating that matters is running horsepower. That is what the motor puts out when working continuously for you.

It is easy to figure out the horsepower for yourself on a compressor. A compressor will put out 3-3.5 cfm @ 100psi per true HP, so just read the specs and divide the cfm by 3-3.5 and you have the true HP.

BTW, that is not an "oil less" compressor. It's a HF 21 gal and does require oil It's actually not a bad compressor.. for the $75 i bought it used, it's definitely paid for itself. The CH if it works will be a much better improvement tho!! Can't wait to go live with it..

I would replace the relief valve just to be safe. They are cheap and easy to swap out. Change the oil in the pump and roll with it. Good score. Bolt it down for safety sake and swap the drain out for a quarter turn ball valve. Makes draining the tank with every use much easier.

I'm sorry. This is a POS and actually illegal to even possess in the state of Illinois. It can't even by scrapped in Illinois with expensive permits. Only non-Illinois residents can move it, haul, and take it across state lines. Just having it your garage is worse than having a stew of mercury, asbestos, and Asian Carp brewing in a day car center.

I'm from Wisconsin. The scrap value is about $200. You paid $75 for it. I'll pay you $100 for, take it off your hands, get it legally out of the state of Illinois, and hopefully keep you from having the state of Illinois snooping around your house and shop. I can make a couple of nickels helping you out.

I was part of that lawsuit...got a die grinder and a 25' rubber hose. Both are actually pretty nice!

That's a nice machine for nothing. Change out the oil, check the inlet filter(probably foam). Make sure drain valve works and that the compressor turns by hand. Hook it up and give it a try.
V x I = W converted to HP is somewhere around 4.5 to 4.8 HP, depending on what you use for voltage and amps.
Using KW output figure its 3.99 HP
