Toilet operation questions

Ive noticed that after the flush is finished, the bowl water level is above about 3/4" the pink water stain line. After about 20 seconds, the bowl water level drops to the pink water stain line and stays there. Why?

I opened the tank. The overflow hose was deep inside the overflow tube. I took it out and let it drain into the tank. The water level in the bowl still does the same thing as before. Should I leave it to drain in the tank?

The level at the throat of the toilet drain is spilling over the edge down to the sewer/septic tank until it evens out.

The level at the throat of the toilet drain is spilling over the edge down to the sewer/septic tank until it evens out.

So nothing is really wrong then? Still flushes fine.



How about the overfill hose? Im letting it just flow into the tank. The bowl still fills up fine.

Check your water level line... Leave the line in the full tube.

In my opinion Big E said it all. If you wonder if your flapper is sealing properly you should try this. Once the water level is stabalized in the bowl put a packet of something like Crystal Lite into the tank. Give it 10 minutes or so and if you see colour coming into the bowl you know you have a faulty flapper.

I agree about adjusting the float as well as putting some lime remover in your tank like torque said. If your tank level apears to be fine you may have a split overflow tube at the top part and this may be why your bowl level slowly reaches the what is normal level.
Do you have hard water? Calcium build up will choke off lines as well as faucet tips.
If it were a leaking flapper then the tank level would eventually reach the float trigger and fill the tank again.

Bowl water is there to prevent getting sewer odor back into the house, it is there and level of water controled by "S" trap molded into rear of bowl. Sounds like tank is refilling bowl a little faster than spill over in trap. Trap seeks its level after tank shuts off. Sounds like all is well. Nothing in your description points to the need for flush or fill valve parts or rebuid needed.

It sounds to me like it is just filling fast and then will slowly leak down the overflow until it reaches the peak level. Once you flush it, the flapper goes closed. Water pressure is whats filling it, so if anything, you may have to adjust the float slightly. If it was mine and it's not running afterwards, I wouldn't worry about it. You probably just have a little amount of play in the float.

Thanks guys

I made a video. At the 0:10 mark, the water level in the bowl has been sitting for a while. At the end of the video, after the flush, the water level in the bowl is higher. By what you guys are saying, that is normal.

How about the overflow hose? Can I leave it the way it is? I believe the toilet is functioning fine the way I have it in the video.

the flow from the small refill hose goes down the center of the tall tube rather than into the tank. Use the clip to hold and aim it. You want the tip to be above the top of that tube aiming in rather than stuck down it.

The fill tube should be inside the pipe, not outside.

I understand it is SUPPOSED to go in the tube, but the bowl is filling up fine (even too much) with the hose outside of the tube. Is there any thing that can go wrong with it outside of the tube?

It puts less water down the drain that way. That extra water helps carry waste down the drain plumbing. With an older toilet, it probably doesn't matter, but the newer ones already use so little water, further reducing the amount sent down the drain may not be good.

Take some cheap food color. Let the tank fill, then dump food color into the tank. Watch to see if the water in the bowl turns color to match the water in the fill tank. My money is on the flapper leaking slowly and you don't realize the fill valve is slowing opening to let more water in.

Want some fun? Use red food color and don't tell your wife you're doing this test. Let her use it and flush it... Post the results, of course!

The tank is dumping water in faster that the waste tube in the bottom will take the water.
This is the way it should be, the high water level is what forces the waste down the tube.
You may notice the water on some toilet designs gets scary high.
When all the violent stuff is over it takes a while for things to settle down.
One of those things is the water level in the built in trap of the toilet.
You have no problem.

If you think the ring around the toilet is bad. The edge of the 'Weir' in the drawing gets covered by sludge and never gets cleaned. That buildup is what causes the water level to slowly lower after a flush. The shape of the passageway also affects the rate at which the water drains.

The refill tube belongs in the overflow tube. The purpose of this tube is to ensure that the bowl fills to its maximum capacity regardless of the rate at which the flush valve closes. The refill tube admits water to the bowl to top it off so that the level in the bowl when the cycle is complete (fill valve closes) is determined by the design level of the internal trap in the bowl, not the amount of water displaced and replenished by the flush. In some cases, the tube is actually admitting water that is only being wasted because the level of the bowl has been satisfied by the flush. In essence, you can't over fill the bowl because no matter how much water you put in, the final level of the water in the bowl is determined by the trap. If your flush valve is leaking, you may determine that by the food coloring method mentioned above, but the water level in the bowl will stay the same because any extra water will simply exit the bowl via the trap. Contrary to what was posted above, if the flush valve is leaking, you will hear the fill valve run periodically, it will not simply open slightly and replenish the water at the rate that it is being lost due to hysteresis built into the valve design. On the other hand, a condition where the fill valve is admitting water constantly when it is supposed to be off is indicative of a faulty fill valve and evidenced by the water level in the tank being at the very top of the overflow tube.

One often overlooked reason for a fluctuation of the water level in a toilet bowl is the influence that the plumbing venting has on air pressure in the drain system. Any negative pressure in the drain system attempts to pull make-up air via the traps in the system. Proper venting is employed to prevent this from happening. There are instances however, where strong winds create a vacuum as they blow over the top of the vent pipe and this will cause the water level in traps to fluctuate. While this effects any trap in the system, the only place where it is observable is the toilet bowl.
