I'm looking for advice, photos & ideas on how to divide up a shop for multiple uses.

I am in the process of building a 26'x46' garage. You enter through two 10' doors in the 26' end. I need to come up with a idea so I can have a welding, drill press and grinding/fabbing table area where I can grind and weld and not spladder or shoot sparks all over my daily drivers or race car.

Maybe a dividing wall? Roll down from roof temporary wall? I'm just looking for ideas on how I can kind of control the area and separate it from the rest of the shop.

My current shop has multiple uses but I'm sick and tired of having grinding dust all over my shelves and pit marks on my vehicle glass. I have a cover on my mustang right now but it has burn marks and grinding dust all over it.

I split my 32 x 48 in half across the 32' width and left 8' walk ways on either end and hung the clear plastic flap strips over the walkways (like you see in big warehouses. So sort of 2-32' x 24' bays. I essentially have a work side where the tools and dirty work is done, park the drivers etc. Then I have a clean side for the Roadrunner.

The wall down the middle gives you extra wall space for cabinets, benches, elec. outlets, air drops, etc. in each bay.

I assume your cars will be just inside the doors?
I would put any permanently placed tools (tables) at the very far end.
Put your big tools on casters so you only pull them out of their “parking spot” when needed.
This will give you a big empty space that can be temporary set up for whatever is the project of the day.
With your big tools on casters you can set up temporary fabrication lines for those projects.

I like the idea of temp walls to curtain off theses areas.
I have seen everything from old rugs, to painters tarps, OSHA approved plastic strips.

Well, just inside is relative I suppose, the RR is roughly 17' long, in a 32' deep bay, 24' wide. The work side is the same. Nothing on casters. Benches and work stations for various processes around the perimeter on each side. Clean tasks (buffing, engine assembly, parts washer, etc.) are on the clean side. The saws, welding table, spraying, is all done on the dirty side. It's a combo wood working and auto shop.

What kind of construction is the main building? For light demising walls, I like steel studs. You can cover them with whatever you like. Pretty much the same with 2 x 4's, too. Interior walls can be 24" O.C., no problem.

The main building is a pole building with the poles on 4' centers. We did it that way because the exterior is stucco and rock. Very stout, 0 deflection. The wall down the middle is just a regular old framed 2x4 wall on 16" centers.

I guess I could split the back half of the shop up the middle making it into two 13'x20' areas. With maybe a sliding 10' wall at the front and a 10' permenant wall in the middle. This way I could have a welding fab area on one side and a wrenching shop on the other. Or slide the door open and have a larger work space.

Anything is possible. It all boils down to what you think you'll be doing in there. I say get the base structure up then with a beer in one hand and a tape measure and marker in the other hand, start envisioning what you want, mark it out, have another beer, and so on. Partition walls are easy. Give it some time.

I don't wanna be one of those "do a search" a-holes, especially since the search function *****, but if someone knows the link to one of the shop organization threads we've had in the past, maybe they can post them up for you.

I was hoping someone would post a photo of their shop thats been divided up with temporary walls .

I've been scetchin up some senerios of layout.

How could anybody be an A-Hole with an avatar like that.
I don't know how computer savvy you are but I laid mine out using MS Visio and played around with it and made up my mind before I even broke ground.
