Howdy folks,

I just recently moved to a new place and for now I have a 10'x11' garage space to work with and let face it, that's not enough space!!

But none the less I have to make do with what I got space wise so I'll be doing the best I can to utilize the space so I don't waste anything. So as I surf the forum for ideas and make progress, I figured why not show off what I got going on to help. Never know if someone else will find some of my ideas useful.

So without further ado, here is my garage in it's current stage.....oh so shameful.

Other then the plastic shelves that I bought I also got this yesterday for $15.
img_2867.jpg

It even has the key with it!

So like I said this is it:willy_nil, it's what it looks like right this second. Hopefully I can transform it enough to get the van back in the garage before the first snow fall.

Small but you can make it seem bigger. Center work table on large casters and strong enough for bench tools. Put your largest power tool in best corner for walking and compressor..etc. Small enough to do epoxy floor really economically. (Now is time) for that. user quality portable rollers on larger tools. Just run more surface mount outlets about 42 inches off floor on 4 walls + a center drop receptacle cord and a few ceiling lights. Put a high shelf for long pieces of aluminum, steel bars, wood..etc. Good luck with it.:rocker:

Welcome to GJ!
Thank you for making the first post a thread on a small garage. I have a small 1 car 9x19 and am interested and subscribed.
Are you sure it's 10x11? Looks more like 20x11.
What size door and what is the height?
What uses and functions do you plan?
I'm finding I have to keep removing things to have adequate space to do anything.
Of the things you have, what is staying, and going and what additional things do you want to bring in?
What plans for heat, ventilation, lighting, power, air and flooring?

Bill,

you are right is it technically bigger. But my main floor working area is 11'10' due to needing to be able to park the family van in there still.

As for what's staying, that's still up in the air. I just moved here so it's still a work in progress. Need to shift through it all to determine what stays and go. My biggest issue is what to do with the left over remodeling stuff. I got some wood and lots of trim to shift through. This was my fiancee's garage and so she just threw stuff in there to store it.

As for electrical I need to work that out also cause right now the house isn't really in a good shape to add more breaker to the current breaker box so I need to get a electrician in and see what he says based on local coding.

I want to get a small air compressor so that will fit in one corner. Right now I'm just really getting started with a blank sheet of paper and reading for ideas on this site.

The main purpose of this garage is the be a general garage, it will hold my tools and store some stuff such as fishing, camping gear. Also it will allow me to do wood work and auto work. One of these days I plan to build a bigger garage but this is what i have to work with right now.

You have to start some where..maybe add a sub panel if needed to simplify electrical work for house- plus 200 Amp main box for house.. Step by step..

What I am finding is that there is less room than I thought in my 1 car. I have been removing things and then removing even more. Originally it was to be a woodworking and metalworking and automotive space with storage for paint and all the household and construction tools I have. It was just a crammed to the rafters storage bin. It became clear that the only thing it could hold was automotive and metalworking. And MAYBE space for a motorcycle or bicycle to be worked on. I am in the process of removing everything else.

See if you can get all that fishing and camping gear out and stored elsewhere. If you want the garage to be a workspace, then storage will screw up the space. It will be very hard to do both woodworking and automotive in a one car, even with the car permanently removed. Is there room for a shed on the lot?

Going to talk to a electrician friend about adding a 100 amp sub panel in the garage this way I can get a few 15 amp breaker for plug ins and a 220v plug in the garage for either air compressor or mig welder. It's not a really big garage so 200 amps is overkill.

Bill,

last night I pulled everything out from the bench and right now I'm going to paint the walls and peg board white so the light will light up the garage better. Also I'm in the process of building a new bench so that old small bench will disappear and a new bigger one will be put in place. Once the bench is built I'll move the filing cabinet under the bench and start putting power tools in the cabinet and then purchase some better pegs to put on the board so I can get some tools on the wall and out of the way.

So today I'll be going to home depot to pick up some lumber, not much since I'll be reusing a lot of the old bench, and get some paint to paint the wall and peg board. I'll also place an order for some pegs from www.wallpegstore.com as I've read some good reviews about them along with they are 1/4" pegs. the current pegs are mixed assortments that are too small for the hole.

Got the Bench started! Along with got my fiancee to paint the pegboard white so it's easier to see the tools on the wall.

I'm going to put a sheet on the side of the bench to close in the legs, this way I can put studs through the board and hang stuff like my pipe wrench and tire iron and so forth. Heavy stuff that need to stay off the wall.

Need to put another coat of white on the pegboard, then I'll paint the legs on the bench red, but I want to keep the top clear, need to research and determine what to coat the top so it has that wood look but yet still tough!

What size is your main box rated? Many older houses are not be able to handle a 100A sub to main box? That was why 200+A was mentioned to cover the whole house plus sub.

You may only need 60 or 75A for small shop. :dunno:

Welcome- you have to come to a place where small is good! Or at least not terrible... You'll get a ton of good ideas here.

Got a point there. I looked at the main box in this house and I can tell it's going to need replacing.

As or the garage I would need a 50 amp for the welder and two 15 amp, one for light and one for outlets.

I got the bench painted and then got some of it cleaned up.

Need to figure out how to organize it now....

Nothing special to add to the thread except cleaning and organizing bolts and screws.

I got a bundle of stuff to put out for the garbage man on Friday.

I plugged that wire bench deal and it started vibrating just as I figured it would.

I'll be taking apart that creation and figure out a better setup for that working motor.

Funny thing about building "work" benches ........... they soon become catch-alls for everything and soon you can't see the tops anymore.

Have a friend in our village that got flooded out with 8 feet of muddy water. Part of his rebuild was purposely eliminating all extra benchtops in his garage.

True, But I rebuild transmission and transfer case every once in awhile and having that bench space is very nice!

Plus I'm known to have more then one project going on at a time so one section can have a project and another on another section.

Some of the bench is going to turn into shelf space but majority I want to keep clear.

so the garage is actually only 10x11 or that is just what you have set aside for "work space"? the pics just look bigger than that I guess...

Madison, the benches look really good. One suggestion (before you get beyond the point of no return) make all your work surfaces the same height. You'll be surprised at how many times you'll be working with long pieces across the two benches, especially the way you have them set up in an "L".

Yea it's work space that's 11x10, but to think small i had to talk small, did that make sense? LOL

Pretty much once it's done there will be a minivan in the garage and I can move it out when i need to but rather keep foot print at 11x10.

I thought about that, when I built the first bench i built it where a HF 41" tool chest can go under it, also a air compressor will go in the corner that the bench corners at.

But I could build a removable shelf that attach to the tall bench that can also be moved to another wall to set up a temp bench. you got me to thinking!!:rocker::D

yep, i got ya. That's what I thought. Its better to think of it as "11x10" if that's what you have to work with even though it may be larger....being that you can't use it, you might as well not even think about it.

Keep up the good work Madison069

You are getting organized and that's what counts. Saves time and energy and makes for a safer work space.

That tool box organization plan looks familiar. LOL

Keep us posted!

I made some doors with shelves for my paint cans awhile back. Cutting the boards with a circular saw was a pain in the behind!! LOL I still need to trim out the white erase board and paint the bare wood. Then some double sticky tape for the markers and I'll be set with that.

Gotta admit that thread title confused me. I know mine is small at 10x19, but with those dimensions its not even a garage haha. Keep up the organization, looks like your making some solid progress.
