This isn't as crazy but I was bidding on this socket for my vw beetle:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190242935071
It sold total for $30.99; on Snapon.com you can get the same socket brand new for $36.25 shipped. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?store=snapon-store&item_ID=65961&group_ID=11760
Granted it didn't go over retail but the savings wasn't that much. In my mind I want to buy my snapon tools for 1/2 off of retail.

You're absolutely right Billy, it can be done with persistance and time. But, with most of the auctions though, Snap-on + Ebay = Insanity. :willy_nil

Yup - that is my benchmark too. If I'm in the 30-40% range for great condition tools I feel really good.

So far, I've had better luck getting 30-40% everywhere but ebay. But, deals can be had on ebay too on occasion.

Ok, a few tips. Number one, never bid until the very last minute. I highly recommend using a sniping software. Vrane.com is free. I use esnipe.com most of the time.

Also, never bid $175. Always go little more, and not in increments of 5,10, 25, 50, 100 etc. I would have bid $177.99 if my original intent was to pay around $175. Its sometimes that extra dollar, two, or penny that beats the other guy.

Bidding on ebay is the same as playing chicken, you need to convince the other guy that you really are crazy enough to do it.

Minor items I go ahead and bid my max, but if its serious I float in on the last few seconds. Bidding in the last few seconds removes the opportunity for the other person to reconsider their max bid, and its gee I was willing to pay $125, but if its worth $130 to this other guy maybe I will go $150 etc.

I agree with what Chad said too.
I always figure what the max is I'll be happy paying...and then add another 10% or so. For instance, when I was looking for a rare Trans Dapt bellhousing for my 322 Nailhead, if one would come up on ebay, I would have been happy to pay $225 for it. But if it sold for $240, I'd have been really irritated that I didn't pop the extra few bucks. If I'd be happy paying $225, and get it for $245, I'll be very pleased after it arrived and was in my shop. But for $275, I'd sit back and wait for the right one to come along.
