Mopped up a puddle - the result of a hole in my roof . . . :(

Cleaned the back yard up. Stored all the deck and patio furniture in the garden shed.

Aslo started laying up the Mustang (1966 GT Convertiable) for the winter. Filled up the fuel tank and added stabilizer. Changed the oil and filter. Topped up the tires to 40 psi. Now just need to wax and cover.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I Didn't get anything done inside the garage except to clean up the pile of bird seed that the mice have made from the new bag. Today I was able to get the front yard cut and leaves somewhat mulched up. then got about 3/4 of a lap in the backyard before getting the tractor stuck in the soft yard. Had to get my boy (who was home from school sick) to come out and help me get it un-stuck. I guess I'll be doing leaves in the backyard manually and parking the tractor.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Had a couple of welding jobs come into the shop last night. A client dropped by a small aluminum casting that was a mount for a starter motor for a small engine on his log-splitter. The bolts from the starter motor had come loose and broke one of the ears/standoffs off. He asked me to weld it back on but it was in pretty bad shape.

I ended up machining a new piece on the lathe out of 1" round stock 6061-T6. I turned it down to .875" stepped down to .750" and fit it onto the mounting bracket. I drilled and tapped it for mounting the starter motor then mocked it up. I was nervous about the casting quality of the bracket so I was not sure how it would turn out. I preheated it a little with a heat gun and it welded like butter. Turned out great, much better than I thought it would based on how porous the casting appeared.

The other was a small aluminum part for another client that I had to build up an edge on and file smooth. Nothing too technical or time consuming.

Sorry, no pictures. I didn't even think about it until after the guys picked up their parts.

Mike.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I recently bought an Ariens 1128 Snow thrower off of Craigslist. Very low hours (less than 10), but it had zero maintenance since new (2004)
So far:
-Oil change M1 5W-30 (was black and stained the dipstick gray)
-Cleaned carb, bowl and jets
-New spark plug
-greased/oiled the entire thing A-Z (auger to zerk)
-changed gearbox oil
-Cleared a blocked breather hose (posted on the previous page of this thread)
-Sanded down a couple of rust spots and repainted. (Duplicolor DE1620 is a perfect match for Ariens' Orange)
-Sanded and painted the muffler and manifold with 1200F degree silver spray paint
-Replaced auger belt
-Replaced Friction Disk
-attempted to replace drive belt, but realized they sent me the wrong belt :willy_nil:

Still to do....
Replace drive belt... and I'll have a quality, good as new US-made, Snow Thrower!!

Also disassembled, cleaned and greased my three Craftsman ratchets.
(1/4" 3/8" 1/2")
Thanks to this page:
http://grandmighty.com/2011/02/how-to-service-your-craftsman-ratchet/

Getting the BB to sit still while I inserted the mesh gear and switch handle was the biggest source of frustration. I found it easiest to insert the mesh gear at angle only half way to hold down the BB, then insert the switch handle from the other side and work it into place. Now they are smooth as silk

Went to my mom's to see about starting up a snow blower she has had sitting in the backyard for the last couple seasons without being used. Pulled pretty well by hand but no gas would flow through. The tank was full. I verified spark.

Took a picture of the engine plate and found a replacement on eBay for $45 shipped and I may even get it by this weekend.

LOVE the electric plug in starts on those things. I'd have been pulling all night just to get nothing but that starter I just held the button and it cranked like a champ.

That happens when no one drains the fuel system. Why not just rebuild the carburetor for $15, buy a bottle of StaBil for next season and use the leftover cash for some beer?

I've tried to rebuild a couple of carbs over the years and not had much luck. Either they drip fuel while sitting (no off for the fuel line) or they don't run well once warm (automatic choke so it surges with the governor I think).

Easier to just replace it. I'll keep the other and possibly rebuild some day if the new one acts up. For the $45, I'll go over, replace it, and bet the engine starts right up with fresh gas.

What do you mean that the plastic don't last long? What exactly caused them to fail?

I pulled down my aluminum gutters when replacing my roof a couple years ago. I was planning on putting up vinyl but have not gotten around to it yet. I have zero trees in my area so leaves would be minimal and probably never a branch.

We were putting up 1X1 trim around the ceiling of the new drywalled ceiling and 1/2" OSB walls.

getting ready for paint this week. taping and mudding the ceiling for paint. it feels warmer already. before it was like working chinese food takeout box. the side wall was not supported and bowing out severely and the center length support under all the roof supports was about 2" too short to attach to the side wall so it was not really holding anything.

got it straightened around and looking good

Was the tank full of fresh or two year old gas? if it was full from two seasons ago, that's the problem right there. I've seen carbs on eBay for $45 but a whole engine?? Shipped? Huge score! Which engine was it? I would love to find a 2nd engine for parts if nothing else. Mine is a Tecumseh OHSK110. 11hp Snow King.

No no, just a carb for $45 shipped.

Yes, the gas was old. I do not think putting fresh gas in would solve the fact that the carb bowl was probably more varnished than I wanted to deal with. Pressed the primer bulb repeatedly and still no smell of gas when cranking.

The carb should do the job nicely. And yes, I will clear the line and empty the tank all the way up to the carb.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Performed maintenance on all my 1/4" and 3/'8" drive ratchets. Some styles are definately easier than others, but they all run smoother with a little TLC. You could definately tell which sets the kids (nice to have someone else to blame) have left outside in the rain, but luckily it still wasn't anything some grease and the wire wheel couldn't fix. Everything is as good as new again.

Also applied another coat of polyurethane to the screw holes that had been filled after mounting the verticle portion of the workbenches.

I worked on trying to finish up the wall I added corrugated metal to. I had to go back and compound a couple of places, then got it primed and painted. I should have my trim on sometime today after I get back from the doctors.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Is there a benefit to the corrugated wall, or is it purely asthetic? Of course it would hold up better to being hit with stuff then drywall, and produce less dust during construction, but is there a real "need" to have it? I see alot of guys using it only behind heavier implements.. mills, lathes and the such, but never bothered to ask why. Possibly to keep shavings from embedding themselves?

Mostly aesthetics.

Walked through it, same thing the past two weeks. Between trying to paint my front porch and almost non stop back to back tours at work since Storm Sandy came through I haven't been able to do anything in there.
Starting to get shop withdrawal....

Repaired a trunk wiring harness for a 2004 Jetta sedan. Wires broke from the constant opening/closing, and someone had done a botched repair before and put the splices right where it bends :wft: they also used too large of a gauge of repair wire. Now it looks clean and OEM.

This is having finished 3/4 of the yard and the trees still have a ton of leaves left to drop. Used a blower to get leaves into the dryer part of the yard so that I could use the tractor and sweeper to clean up.

Continued organizing the garage today. I'm a bit ashamed as to how much of a mess I have let the garage continue to be in, but I started a thread with pictures. Have a look, it's in my signature.

The cabinets are made by goliath manufacturing in murrieta calif.
The one pictured is a prep cart for getting a car ready to paint.
It is a one piece unit that holds different grits of sand paper all the sanding tools, masking paper, and spray cans needed to take a car from the body man to the paint booth ready to paint.
I found them at the sema show in las vegas last week. (couldn't resist buying them)
