I just don't get the draw to those vises?

I think the fact that they cost big bucks to buy new has created an allure that they are better. I have several and will admit they do feel a little more crisp than other less refined vises but I agree that they aren't really all that special. Certainly not special enough to warrant the cult like following they have achieved.

Regardless, the Wilton bullet style vises are still made in the USA and that counts for something even if the only reason they cost so much is due to American worker health and retirement benefits......

Bams50 I have that excact vise in 5" on my welding table at work. I do like the machine unpainted look. I just love old vises, if this site wouldn't of popped up a few years back I would of saved hundreds of dollars in old vises. Why wilton?, compare a 6" chinese vise and a 6" wilton and you will feel the weight, see the thickness of the casting and know that the materials used were quality. Not scraps left over from crushed cars.

I guess, but still, compared to a Kurt machinist vise its a crude piece of machinery, and there are many other vintage brands out there that feel like quality without the added hype. Just over the last month we have had a few "Bullet" threads and I am starting to think its considered fashionable to have one.

I forgot to mention that Wilton vises are made from a space age material which withstands shock, vibration and all forms of economic downturn and civil unrest. I heard that General Patton was also reported as saying, "the Wilton bullet vise is the greatest battle implement ever devised."

OK, I am obviously kidding but let's see how fast the news spreads across the interweb. I see the prices of Wilton vises going up significantly due to this newfound collector interest.

Not really new-found I don't think. I sold a few 3-4 inch bullets 5-6 years ago on ebay for big bucks. I kept a 4 inch for myself, but the vise I use most often is a Reed. What gets me is that the baby bullet (2 inch?) often goes for more than bigger versions, sometimes $200 or more. I guess some people think it is cute.

They are nice for sure. I bought two 3 1/2 inch bullets at an auction for $50. When I got home and started checking into how much money they were bringing, I put them on Craigs list for $400 (for the pair) and they sold within a week.

For a $350 profit in a week, I don't miss them a bit.
