Storage shed build

I live in Orange County and have a small 1000 sq ft house. The garage is a flat two car and maybe has 6 inches on either side of the door. With tools, it's tight. There was already a shed in the backyard, but it was small and dilapidated. So, I decided to build another one. The previous one was on a small pad that was roughly 8x8, so I decided to add to the pad and bring it out to 8x14. This also keeps me under the code requirements in OC for a permit. I have a large avocado tree right next to the shed which provides shade and makes a good space for it. Nothing really grows under the tree, so it's a good use of space. I have a pretty big lot (7400 sq ft) for OC even though I have a small house. My main goal is to move all the storage out of the garage, along with tools I don't use as often so I can open up space in the garage.

On with the pics. The first one is a pic I found to use as reference of what I wanted:

End of the day today. Trim done, working on siding. Should hopefully get some more done next weekend. 8" tall masonite siding. More expensive, but I can't stand T-111. I figured it's an investment and should add some value to the house. I'm putting in some single pane french doors that I got for the awesome price of free from a friend. Still trying to decide what I want to do inside. Will finish with either OSB or drywall and possibly Race Deck flooring, tile, or laminate.

Looks nice, but don't all the windows greatly diminish the useable wall space inside?

Agreed, but at least he only has windows on the one side, not three sides like the initial picture.

I don't think the OP mentioned running electrical to the shed. The windows would be good natural lighting without giving up too much wall space.

Yup, no electrical. Don't want to deal with permitting. Wanted some natural light and I think they add to the look I wanted. It is too plain without windows. I should still have more than enough space than what I am planning for. Like I said, my main goal is to get things moved out of the garage.

Understand the issue with running electrical and permitting. So I didn't. But I do have light switch that turns lights on and off and no it isn't solar. I have a yard lighting transformer in the garage that feeds a line just barely buried, out to the storage building. It goes inside and up to a plastic box with light switch - except it is low voltage; not a permit thing.

Lights are just yard fixtures hung along the wall. I guess I could go further and retrofit some kind of fixtures with the yard light parts, but this works fine. I have thought about retrofitting one of the old barn lights on bent pipe outside the roll up door. Maybe someday.

You shown to us your fantastic shed, step by step and I really appreciate your work of how you did it well. Nice I really like it! =)

Looks good! That backyard reminds me of the house I grew up in in Anaheim. I'm thinking about building a workshop a little bigger in my backyard, seeing as how the garage is getting full. Where did you find the plans? How's the cost (plywood sheet = 25.00)?

I just built a 14' x 8' shed with a sloped roof (10' to 8'). It sits up against the house...well, 2' from it. It has a 3/4" plywood tongue and groove floor, 2x4 wood framing, hardiplank siding painted to match the house and a 3' steel exterior man door. No windows. I put 1/2" plywood on the inside walls. I ran electrical in the shed to two lights, one exterior light and one plug and (for now), it is powered from an extention cord plugged into a GFI outlet on the outside of the house.

Total cost was right around $3,000.00

I sheeted with OSB, around here, it's ~$10/sheet. I think with concrete, lumber, OSB, roofing and windows I'm right around $2K. I'm getting the french doors for free though for the front. When I looked at the pre-fab units, there was no doubt to do it this way. The ones you buy are over-priced junk. 24 on center with T-111 siding for around 3 grand for the size I wanted. Plus, I still would have had to assemble it. I feel doing it this way is an investment in the house. I think down the road when I sell it will add value.

No plans, I have a friend that's a GC. Framed it just like a miniature house. Studs are 16" on center. Built the walls and tilted up, cut the ridge beam and used brackets for the rafters, stayed 16" on center. Sheeted with OSB and roofed. My buddy had a guy come lay the roof for $300 while we worked on the siding. Should be able to finish up the complete outside this weekend or next. Then just need to prime and paint and finish the inside.

Getting there. Finished up the siding this weekend as well as getting a majority of the painting done. I was an idiot and should have just spray bombed the whole thing in primer when it was just sticks. Now that I have to come back and hand primer/paint eaves....I learned my lesson.

Hey guys...looking for suggestions on flooring and covering the walls (if at all). I'm really torn on what I want to do between:

a) It's a shed, put stuff in it and forget about it.
b) drywall or OSB to cover the walls, OSB seems easier to utilize wall space
c) Flooring. Don't really want to leave concrete. Think of either floating it with leveler and using black and white vinyl tiles, cheap laminate or epoxy. I got a sample of Race Deck, but I'm not diggin it for the price and the amount it will be used.

I won't really be going in and out all that much, but I built the shed as an investment and hoping it will add appeal to the property down the road since the house is small. I really need to get some stuff out of my garage, but I would also like the shed to have a finished look inside. Opinions? or maybe something else I haven't considered.?

I'm not sure how well drywall will hold up with all the temperature and humidity changes. Perhaps you could finish the inside wall like you did the outside walls.

1/2 plywood on the walls and ceiling, just piant the floor. Dam, 2-3K for a little shed! I haven't built anything for awhile! I'm glad I don't need any more storage!

I'd just paint the inside with some white paint and be done. White will make it brighter inside. It's a shed. No need to sheet the inside walls. Maybe put up some 1x8 stringers around inside 6' from the floor to hang stuff on.

Sheeting the inside will make it harder to see any water leaks. Death for a shed. Simpler to repair if need to without the sheeting too.

Last time I checked Lowe's had some oil based "barn paint" for $15 a gallon. I used some of the paint & primer Valspar at $25 a gallon.

Almost there. It's easy to see why cheap laminate flooring is cheap. The edges want to crack if you just look at them wrong. Had enough extra boards and it's just a shed. I originally was going to do epoxy, but was going to be too much prep work to make it look good. It was just easier to cover it up.

Finally done with the inside. Just need to move in my shelving and organize everything. Got started with my bikes.
