My contractor wants to install my garage doors before drywall. One garage door installer told me they install after drywall.

I searched here and Googled, but no definitive answer.

What say y'all: Before or after, and why?

Thanks.

My installer wanted the sheeting done first. That way they fasten the tracks to the sheeted ceiling. I had it all done last week and it looks great!

You can use a laser level that will allow you to transfer your rafter locations to the floor. Now lay out your rail track and make sure you can hit the rafters, if not install some backing. Go ahead and drywall and use your floor measurements and shoot in the bracket support holes. I used this same method to install my hanging florescent lighting.

Drywall all cut out to fit around already installed door track and hangers will look like ****.

Drywall first but, you should not mount the center spring tension plate over drywall. It should be attached to solid framing.

You could add some extra blocking between you trusses or floor joints to make it easier to mount the hangers, before d. w.

When was the last time you saw a door installer using a laser level? You also don't need any special backing to backhang a door..That's what the angle iron is for! Just use a stud finder..A hammer, A piece of paper, and a small trim nail..Done deal ! Best to have sheetrock hung before. also tapped and painted!! I wouldn't want them slopping mud and paint all over my new doors!!
Don't let them sheetrock over your door jambs!!

Drywall first

Best advise you're gonna get...

Wish I didn't listen to the door installer, mine looks like ****. My drywall guys had a lot of extra work going around everything.

Good advise. I listened to the door installer and he hack little chunks of wood in mine. A ***** to fix after installing doors.

i put left over blandex around the doors so i had something to anchor the tracks and springs to. then butted the drywall up to that and painted. worked well for me.

My framer had the forethought to frame it out in a way that drywall doesn't go under the garage door brackets. We have 2bys on edge that it all is attached to and drywall is now installed butted up to the 2bys.

I did have to remove the jungle gym bracketry on the celing to install the drywall, but that wasn't a big deal.

If you want a clean looking install, put the drywall on first. I don't like the 2x6 bracing over the finished wall so I put all my bracing under the OSB, and then wrapped some sheets of aluminum trim stock over the OSB and around the inside corner. Take a look at the pics, it is easier to show you than tell you about it.
