For general home use, are there any good deals out there? Any recommendations, or ones to avoid? 12V or 18/20V? Again, this is for general home use. Thanks.

Cordless impacts are like religion around here, except not banned.
everyone has a brand they like/use that they believe to be best.

I own three DeWalt 12v Lithium units, and love them.

For the most part they are all imported from one of the **** tool making countries so you have to put aside COO. I've had Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Panasonic and a few others, Panasonic was probably the best.

Now I have the Ryobi One+ 18 volt set, surprisingly good for the price but the best thing about the One+ and the reason I chose them was that they offer a boat load of tools (including garden tools), some good, some not so good. I have the 1/4" impact and it's good for home use, if I was using it for work everyday I don't know how well it would hold up.

Home Depot has a Black Friday special on the 18 volt One+ Ryobi drill, impact, charger and lithium batteries for $99 and they also have a 12 volt Makita lithium drill/impact kit for $99. I wish one of the other better companies offered as many tools as Ryobi, including garden tools, because I don't like the fact that Ryobi is essentially available only through Home Depot.

If your looking for a deal...
A) Wait for Milwaukee to have a buy back/trade in program..This spring I got $100.00 off a drill kit by trading in a busted Makita. Smokin deal.
B) Wait for the Milwaukee buy back and buy my "previously loved" M18 impact once I get my Brusless version... ROFL

I own a makita, I'd say get a makita. Or Milwaukee. Or Bosch.

Honestly, you'll get a lot of different opinions. But I think the one general consensus would be to get something that has lithium ion batteries.

I just got the new Dewalt 20V brushless. Effin thing has some muscle. If you want something small, do not pass over the 12V Makita impact/drill driver combo set, highly recommended. I have the smaller 10.8V set and it's awesome around the house. In reality, though, any of the major brands are practically equal and the decision will be personal preference. If you get lithium, you really can't go wrong.

I have about 99% dewalt tools and they have served me well, but I like those new Milwaukee brushless tools coming out. Wait long enough and soon all the tool companies will make them lighter, with longer lasting batteries and cheaper to buy.

Two more to consider, Ridgid and I believe Rockwell (Menards), both have lifetime battery warranties and batteries ain't cheap.

The Craftsman stuff was Ryobi, not sure if it still is.

Don’t tell anyone, but I have this one…
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-4-quarter-inch-18-volt-cordless-impact-driver-67028.html
It has driven its fair share of lag screws and deck screws into 100 year old oak. No complaints about the tool. Still holds a good charge ect.. but I should get an extra battery. I originally just got it waiting for the lithium’s to come down in price, but it has really been a good tool.
BTW why could I not get the pic to show up?

For 1/4" I use my Black & Decker cordless screwdriver with a hex to 1/4" square adapter. Plenty of torque for small bolts and nuts.

For driving screws, I have a Dewalt impact driver. Also works great with either a 1/4" or 3/8" adapter.

I went with the Ridgid and the lifetime battery warranty. Otherwise, cordless tools are just throwaways. (I've read that a lithium-ion battery lasts two or three years, even if it's never used.)

I had a plumber working at the house last week. He was using a few Milwaukee cordless tools and said he hated the lithium-ion batteries they had in them. He said he had lots of problems with them holding a charge. I personally have no experience with them but have been looking for a 1/4" impact driver just cant make up my mind which one to buy.

It seems a big complaint with cordless tools is battery charge and life (because they sit).

For home use, you will probably always have a power source nearby.
You might consider this CORDED makita impact driver. I dont own one, but have considered it for some time now, as the reviews are EXTREMELY good, the price is modest, and its made it japan (better quality):

For home use I have the Ryobi +1. I have had no problems with them and there is a variety of tools to choose from. I would only buy the ones that come with the Lithium batteries. I believe the Ryobi's are essentially the same as the Craftsman C3.

Seriously? Only 2-3 yeas of battery life? For an occasional home user, that's important to me. I'd like an impact driver to last me 5-10 years before needing it replaced.

The DEWALT 20v is the best 1/4 impact I have ever used - and I've used every other main brand. All the major players like Bosch, Milwaukee, Makita, and DEWALT etc. make pretty good tools. I liked both the Makita and Milwaukee 18v over the DEWALT 18v but the new 20v is simply a better tool. It is perfectly balanced and has a vastly superior light system to any others. It's actually smaller in size but way more powerful than DEWALT's 12v impact.

For home use I would only recommend Ryobi. For durability and battery cost, you cant touch it. I avoid Craftsman and B&D because they keep changing battery designs making finding replacement batteries impossible.

I love Ridgid tools but their lifetime service agreement (LSA) is dubious. Of all the tools I bought from them and sent in warranty registration cards, only 2 tools are actually registered with them. They seem to 'never receive' the paperwork and by the time it gets sorted out, 'oh we are sorry, you are past the 90 day registration period.'

Again, A great tool that I will continue to buy in the future but the LSA is worthless IMHO.

I bought the Ryobi Drill & Impact Driver kit with two batteries and a charger last night at Home Depot for $99

I just charged up both Lithium batteries. These are the smaller lithium batteries, my dad has the large one with the charge status on it.

The one reason I bought these is because I already have a Ryobi Cordless Angle Grinder. I want to put a wire wheel on the grinder and use it over at the tire machine for cleaning wheels before we remount tires. Currently we are using a CORDED angle grinder to do this job and the electrical cord is always in the way, getting tangled up all over the machine.
