First post here. I recently purchased our first home. I'm not much of a shop guy but a big gun guy. My safe could be seen any time I opened the garage so I built a cabinet around it.

Now you need to casually stencil "THERE ARE NO GUNS IN THIS CABINET" across the front. They will never look there. :) Kidding. Looks good. Out of sight, out of mind. I have a similar but different problem. My garage is well organized and stocked with expensive tools.... and the garage door is open whenever I am out there. Hard to stick the larger tools/equipment in a cabinet out of sight.

I was going to get some sort of Dangerious Chemical sign to post on the outside. Here is is from the front of the garage, it is not as obvious. I just moved in so I am still trying to get shelving to get things put away.

i keep my boxes along the side wall, chopsaw is covered with an old dirt towel, welder has a cover on it as well.

i try to keep everything behind "closed doors" several cabinets, my trail truck stays in the garage, no way to see the workbench or anything thats on it.

normally i have a vehicle parked in front of the door blocking the view from the street, single lane driveway runs right next to the house.
garage is 80 ft or so slightly uphill from the street.

the jehovahs witnesses were the only ones stupid, or brave, enough to walk past the dog warning sign, needless to say the dog nearly got 2 of them before they jumped back out of her reach.
they wont be coming back again

Shooting4life, if it were my cabinet, I'd:

A. Lock it - Those ammo cans walking off would ****. Remember that you are responsible for all weapons and ammo in your possession and can be found liable if a round or weapon stolen from your house is used in a crime. At least that's how it is in IL.

B. Wire in a VERY loud siren or a home alarm door open sensor and a hidden on/off switch. I.E. wire the switch over behind the mini-fridge so no one will see it or think about it. The home alarm sensor could work VERY well if you wire it/set it in a way that it is always armed unless you specifically shut it off. Then, if you are ever forced to open the safe, you can open the cabinet (or the actual safe itself) and that will notify the police automatically.

i would make it look like an electrical transformer or some kind of high voltage power box. all kinds of HIGH VOLTAGE warnings and CAUTION HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL SERVICE.

things like that scare most thieves.

chemical warnings would attract them

lol

my gun safe looks like a furnace air duct

I've seen several guys rocking the Gladiator Garage cabinets, but does anybody have any of the newer Kobalt cabinets from Lowes in place? To me they look equally as cool as the Gladiator stuff, and the prices I've seen on them haven't been too terrible. Was curious if anybody wanted to comment on how well they hold up, quality, etc.

The cabinet is locked. The inside of the left door also has a cane lock as well. In california we just have to keep kids from getting to our stuff. Seeing as how I don;t have any kids that should not be a problem.

Also, I plan on adding a motion sensor security camera that faces the safe in the garage that send updates to my phone when activated. I also am going to add a couple of fire sprinklers above the cabinet, but that will be further down the road.

Love the lockers.
I'm waiting for some bigger single ones to go on sale at a local industrial supplier to replace the upper shelf I built with these instead of wasting time to build tracks for doors etc.. I don't like seeing the **** up there if I don't have to.
Also here is the first cabinet I built with the most used tools. I would like to build a few more for other things like detailing products, paints, air tools, etc.

That is why I want to get the F*** out of Communist Controlled Chicago Democratic Illinois!!! We are planning on moving within 5 years.. TX or AZ on the list for now.. I'm sure as we keep looking, we might add others to explore.

Burtonrider10022, you shoot any IDPA/IPSC/USPSA/3gun matches in the area? If you do, then we've probably run into each other :D If not, you should!! Lots of fun

 good god no, I'm luck if I have time to sleep let alone hit the range. Full time job w/ ~10-20 hrs OT + part time job + full time student (brick and mortar, no online) = not enough time for guns :-(

Although I may (or may not, if "she" is asking) have bought a lower receiver two nights ago... Black Friday sales FTW lol

PM me though about the matches, over break and during the summer I'd love to get involved. I'm by no means a top shot but I am pretty good.

So not to derail this conversation, but after 15 minutes of Googling I can't turn up any state or federal statues that reflect this, lest of all any in Illinois or the Chicago area specifically. The handful of relevant results that DID come up were all civil cases that ultimately were defeated or dismissed.

In several states you *can* break *a* law if you fail to report a weapon as stolen within a reasonable timeframe and it is used in the commission of a crime, which in all but the most narrow interpretations is a reasonable expectation of a responsible gun owner. But again, nothing about being liable for the crimes committed with the weapon.

Some states have laws requiring you to secure your firearms in some way (either trigger locks, gun safes, etc), register them annually, etc., but again, nothing that states if the gun is stolen you are liable for the crimes committed with it.

If somebody can cite an actual statue or code somewhere that defines this, please do so. Heresay with laws like this pisses me off. People are incited enough to parrot what they hear from somebody's brother's third cousin's husband (or Fox News, which is roughly the same thing), but they can't be bothered to check it out for themselves.

Oh yea...I feel it coming IBTL :rocker:

I don't think an individual can be held responsible if someone breaks into that individuals home, steals ammos and guns, then commits a crime with said weapons. If that was the case, the prisons would be so full of innocent people that half the population would be locked up. About the only time an individual can be held responsible for someone else's actions with a firearm is if the individual is irresponsible with it and a minor, child, gets that firearm, plays with it and shoots someone else. And that is usually within the confines of the home.

Remember, he was referring to "Bizarro-World", ie Illinois. People deserve what they get for living there...

Your cabinet/safe looks great and the precautions you've taken are more than enough already. Well done.

I bought a set of the Kobalt cabinets. Here is my thread:

Seems like an entire thread could be devoted to ikea items repurposed for shop use. I found this solution to keep my wrenches from sliding when closing the drawers. Cheap, low profile and just strong enough. Some magnetic knife holder, with a name I cannot pronounce nor spell despite my Scandinavian ancestry.

Stores many of my collectables... I have too many. The staircase was a collection point for ****, so I built-in some veggie/fruit bins and added an old display case to store more stuff.

I'm glad you posted that. I have two sets of Ignition wrenches that slide if I look at the drawer. I have some rolled up magnetic strips that will work perfect in there.

That's an old Clodbuster R/C.

Old is an understatement. I think that's when Tamiya still made stuff in Japan. I have a Thundershot from my childhood that still runs, but sits in a box in the basement till my kid is old enough to play with it.

I picked up some slatwall, white, 4x8' sheet with a bunch of hooks and hangers for $40 delivered off of craigslist. Goes up this weekend, then I may start a "build" thread.

Love this thread, so many great ideas!!

Make sure first that the space has proper insulation and is AIRCONDITIONED, especially necessary in your neck of the HOT southwest...otherwise it is unusable 6 to 8 months a year!

With the length of the shelves and the thickness, are you sure you won't need some sort of a brace midways between to keep them from bowing if you have any weight on them?[/QUOTE]

There are pieces of 3/4 inch ply cut to fit between the shelves behind the face frame. Just to be clear those are before and after pictures.

The Kramer has been hanging there for years, I got it a little after the episode was aired.
