Ask the garage door question in the General Garage section of this site.

Don't disconnect the safety features of a residential garage door. In my experience, most problems like this are a misaligned or failed sensor. Replacements are cheap, and if the door is over ten years old, don't begrudge replacing them when troubleshooting. At that age or older, they have lived their design service life.

Here is my third Prentiss, a Model 20 that I got off of CL this weekend. It looks a little rough - the slide was welded.

Looks like the original pin, so I can finally make some repros for my #21 and Jewelers vises.

Will let this sit over the winter and start restoration early in the spring.

How am I you ask? Could be better (more vises), could be worse (more vices).

I have an early 20th century Reed with most of it's original paint, and it's not flat but Semi Gloss black, and that seems to be the most common color for most of the American vises of that era.

That has certainly been the consensus here on GJ on the subject.

picked this one up at an auction this spring for $30. As I carried it out heard a few guys commenting how I paid too much and could have bought a new one for a bit more... not sure what they buy or where they shop.... this one is a milwakee 767... it made it though the fire but have not found anything that takes the smoke damage off...

I was having second thoughts about the color but once it was finished with the white letters I knew I made the right color choice :)

I'm gearing up to restore my grandfathers 3" and 4" Columbian vises that I inherited. Since I cannot afford a Wilton vise, I figured the next best thing is to repaint my vises 'Wilton' Verde Green. A friend of mine has a blasting cabinet, so I will head over there and give them a good stripping. The 4" vise also has a bent handle (eek- I know). It's bent on two axes (sp?), so heating/bending it back is probably not going to happen. We pondered making one out of 1/2" 304L rod and 3/4" 304L ball bearings on his lathe. We'll see what happens with that.

This is what I am working with.......

Hey white take a brass hammer and a piece of scrap steel and tap that bend out of your handle by using the scrap steel as a make shift anvil and you should be able to get it pretty straight. Also very cool that they were your grandfathers vises.

8 INCH JAW CHARLES PARKER MACHINIST MECHANICS BENCH VISE - listed on eBay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-INCH-JAW-...ICS-BENCH-VISE-Blacksmith-Anvil-/110979626919

Measurements are: Overall height 16 1/2", length 31", width 14", jaw size 8", handle length 20", opens 14", base 14" x 14", actual weight 238 lbs.

Not mine and not affiliated with the listing but thought it might be of interest.

Matchless Antiques focus on anvils and blacksmith tools and tend to get premium prices.

Funny you should ask, I have the only other one that I've ever seen. Check out my post about it here.

They clean up real nice too. Enjoy!

Dad was over for Thanksgiving today. I took him out to the garage to show him my latest vise acquisitions. His response, "What the hell are you going to do with those?" Hahahahah!

So we're talking and he says, "you know Pa (my grandfather) had a huge vise bolted to the workbench in the garage out home. It went with the house when Ma moved out." Ouch. That would have been 30 years ago. How cool would that be to have my grandfather's vise going back 60+ years? I certainly remember the garage. Sadly, not the vise.

Here's an Erie Tool Works 106. It was rusty, so I cleaned it up a bit and oiled it. That's about as far as I usually go with these.

Nice! Never seen one quite that big, always have thought the slides were pretty cool on these.

Saved a pair of heavy vises at the junkyard on Tuesday. One is a Desmond-Simplex, about 4 inch jaws. The other is a Wilton C2, the Wilton has some damage (torch or casting problem?) to one side of the dynamic jaw, looks like about 3/4" worth is missing. Both seem to work okay, will have to do a full resto on both of them, I think I will keep the Wilton as it is my first one, and I don't think it's going to have a lot of collector value with the damage to the one jaw.

Oh, I paid $50 each for the two vises.
