I decided that I wanted to invest in an Aloris type wedge design, quick change tool post for my lathe. I ordered a BXA for my 14X40
I ordered import, but for my usage, it will do...
The toolpost & adapters were almost 400$, but I think its worthwhile.
I had to machine the new T-slot adapter for holding the toolpost, as the one supplied did not fit the T-slot on the lathe. All faces needed to be milled. I also adjusted the height on all the tools with an indicator, and all tools are set about 0.002" below center at the cutting edge. I also qualified the toolpost, to have less that 0.001" on perpendicularity of the tools with the axis of the chuck (especially important with thin part-off tools)

After picking up my parcel, I saw local add for card files...
went to see them, and picked all of them up (4 cabinets)
I put 3 in my shop, and the 4th, will go in my garage...
300$, for all, not bad.
A good clean up, and taking off the paper labels, will be all thats needed.
Paint condition is real nice too...
I found some papers in the bottom, dating from 1961 ; these look like they were used in an insurance company during that time. It looks like they were stored for a while.

p.s. - Sorry about your Alouettes last weekend. Should be a good game for the Argos tomorrow.

Got a picture of the lathe that your quick change is now resident on? From the pictures it looks like my Frejoth mini.

Its a Harbor freight 13X40 ;
I recently installed a DRO kit on it too... This is my "work in progress" shop:

It used to be my garage, but I built a detached one last summer, and converted the old one car garage into my "shop"
This is my garage now :)

Great looking shop!

My lathe is nowhere as big as yours, but when I upgraded to a tool post it became a pleasure to do stuff, and the speed gain was awesome. I find that I usually use my late to make a tool or custom part that I need right in the middle of a job while working on something else. The quick change really helps to whip things out quick and get back to what I need to finish.

I have been using those files, check files and lateral files for 50 years in my shops. The only thing wrong is that you paid way to much for them. I buy them for $20 a piece.

He paid what he paid. Get over it. I paid $80 each for a couple of 8 drawer card files. If I'd known I would have called you first ... 50 years ago.

I have been looking at classifieds for months on card files, and I see a lot of them asking over 120$ a piece. I ended up by paying 75$ a piece, and at that price I'm happy.
I could have waited a few years to get a deal, but in my mind, 5 years to find 4 cabinets at 20$, comes to about a difference of 11$ a year; More than adequate pay off for what they give me back...

As for being 20$ each, these are 27 drawer files, and I would just like to know, since you have had them in your shop for the last 50 years, when's the last time you bough some?

Also, I am sure you understand, that different areas, have different asking prices.

All being said and done, I'm a happy camper on these!

Cheers!
Fred

Fred,

You'll like the Aloris holder, they make life so much easier for many things. If you have a rocker tool post, don't ditch it. Every now and then you'll wish you had one if you do "creative" setups. The turret tool post you used to have is, in my opinion, the worst invention in machining history.

What kind of bike are you working on?

The DRO I installed is a Sinpo 2L with a regular scale on the Z and a miniature scale on the cross slide. I bought this set up off e-bay, and I'm very happy with it.

It was the best bang for the buck.

Thats actually a scooter:
My son is 13, going on 14 next summer, so he is going to be old enough to drive it around.
Its a Derbi GPR50 (Spanish bike) they're aren't many of the around, but they do look real good for a scooter. I do have a couple more bikes that I built, its always fun to work on a two stroke bikes...
This is what it looks like:

And this is me during DRO installation
Nothing like beers and friends on a friday evening in the shop!
