I was given a light that I can run on 220 and was looking at bulbs. Lows has a 400w High Pressure Sodium 45000 lumes and a Metal Halide 36000 lumes
Which one would be better, I will just use this light as general light and use my cfl's of florsent when working on something.

what is the fixture rated for, you can't run a MH lamp in a HPS fixture or vice versa. also needs to be rated for wattage, can't put a 400 watt lamp in a 250 watt fixture.

I'm not sure I will have to look but it is a 400w light
It says m59 400watt

m59 is a metal halide lamp code. sodium lamps are coded lu

Thanks everone I went back to the shop and got the full model number and found as mentioned it is a metal halied light

I will be using it inside

There are MH lamps made to run off a HPS ballast, but they are not worth the extra cost IMO, specialty lamps are too expensive anyways. Just tossing out some semi-useless info....

The selection of lamps is huge. Make sure you have the right one. There are frosted, clear, ones that burn in all positions, ones that only burn when within a few degrees of vertical, and there are pulse and probe start. Probe start are the older variety that is being replaced with pulse start. The two are not interchangeable and require the correct bulb.

The M59 is your clue to what the lamp is.
