I have an opportunity to buy a used Jet 1550 metal lathe. It is a big sucker. The seller says it has a 7.5 HP 220 3 phase motor. The specs I found on line say 5 HP 220/480 3 phase. It also has a 1/8 HP 3 phase coolant pump motor as well.

What will I need to get this under power in my shop? I have 110/220 single phase. What sized rotary slave would I need for 7.5 HP and alternatively, 5 HP? What would the amp draw be?

What other alternatives do I have?

nec charts on a 230v 1 ph motor shows 40a full load amps. you would need to add the losses of the phase converter and the coolant pump to the load. you could use a vfd and that might make the conversion losses easier to handle. you will also need to account for starting current. the vfd usually has a soft start feature.

I would suggest a drive for this application. My personal recommendation is a Schneider Altivar 71 ATV71HU75M3, which is rated for single phase use. You will also need an input line reactor to balance out that load.

Expensive tho......

I don't need a lathe that bad. I'd rather pay more for a smaller 3 phase lathe or one with a single phase motor. My 2 hp mill runs just fine off a rotary that I made out of a 3 hp motor.

A 5hp 3Ø 240v motor has a 15.2a FLC and a 7.5hp 22a. My uglys doesn't list 1/8hp but a 1/2hp takes 2.2a FLC...
