I started re-doing my workbench area in the garage yesterday to get more workbench space. I've been on garage journal too much lately lol



Here's the before:

The rollaway toolbox usually sits next to the workbench.

The future holds something different for the toolbox

New workbench/cabinet in progress

My makeshift outfeed table.

Had to rip some 2x6's to make a custom cabinet base since the floor slopes. 3.5" in the back and 3.75" across the front.

Drawers assembled (all 1/2" ply)

Drawers hung on the sliders and fronts mounted

Toolbox seperated in half mounted under the cabinet. You can see judging by the sawdust and shavings that the far left toolbox didn't fit in without a little persuasion from the hand power planer and the sander. I left myself 1/8" of wiggle room but apparently that wasn't enough.

That's all I got done yesterday.

For the workbench top, I plan on ripping and planing down some 2x6's and routing some T&G's into them. Then poly the top.

More pics to come. It will be painted the same color as the surrounding cabinets.

Was out till 11pm last night rewiring the switches on my new mill along with the RPC to run it. The stock wiring was all crusty. Runs like a champ now.

Before, the wiring was nasty, the motor wouldn't run in reverse there and there was another accessory wired in that I removed:

5HP rotary converter. Best thing for 3 phase machines, IMO. The panel was a deal off eBay and the seller was local. Wired it up with my 5hp idler motor. Nice to have 3 phase power at the flick of a switch.

Nothing fancy but I put together a little air tool holder. Hoses, chucks, gauges. I mounted it between the hose reel and the Compressor. Hung a pretty cool sign too!!! And no I wasn't smoking any........I couldn't get pic to show straight up for nothing.............

Inspired by akdiesel's Unistrut workbench frame and Steevo's, I started by own to house 4 Husky 26", 5 drawers cabinets. Drawn up a plan and changed it couple of times but now set to begin putting the Unistrut together.

In photo, I put together some legs with adjustable 1/2" feet. One of the leg has the Unistrut cover in black color. All parts came from HD except for the plastic cover, which came from McMaster-Carr.

That should work out great for you. I like your adjustable legs. If you want you could alos add the Unistrut / Superstrut squares with the 9/16" holes and put them under the carrige bolts with some rubber pads on the bottom. The holes will keep the bolts centered while the squares and the rubber pads give your bolts some some protection from water / rust. Here is a couple of pics of what I am talking about.

Planed and ripped some 2x6's for the workbench top tonight. I ripped them down to 5" wide on the table saw to straighten them out and square up the edges. Then I ran them through the planer to take 1/16" off each side. Then I edge glued the boards together and clamped it up. I'll pull the clamps off tomorrow.

Also added another section of pegboard to fill in the empty spot where the toolbox used to be.

I noticed that your tool box top is now totally non-functional. Do you have plans for the space? Maybe remove the top?

I only kept screwdrivers up there so it's not that much of a loss. I'm gonna re-arrange the toolbox a little bit and put the screwdrivers in one of the drawers. I looked at removing the top but the piano hinge is spot welded to the tool box so I just left it. I didn't want to cut it off in case I decided to remove the toolbox from under the cabinet at a later date. I'm gonna trim out around the boxes to cover up the gaps.

You might look at pulling the pin on the hinge. That way you could remove the lid, or makie is removable while in place. It will look better, and still be functional space.

That was my plan but it didn't look "removable" to me. It appears to be crimped in place.

Built a holder for my long allen sockets. I have always hated having tings that don't really have a home. And I hated pulling them off of the socket rail. I just used some scrap I had in the scrap box. and went to town. I might start another thread later on my HF 5 drawer roll around add-ons. Nothing is safe around me in factory form. My wife HATES it. She just shakes her head and rolls her eyes anymore. I've got a few hours invested and about $1.50 in the end caps. I finished it last night but had to wait until this moring for the paint to dry to mount it.

Replaced the starter motor in my GMC Yukon. Did this with the garage door open and the truck half-way outside because there is no room in this small garage to do car repair, hence the giant build I've got going on now out in the field.

Sounds like a good opportunity to make it a time capsule.

Added some accessories to my vise stand. I'm going to add a few more when I figure out what else I need on there, and then have my buddy powder coat the whole thing bright red. I might even strip down my Wilton and have it coated black or gray. Any other accessory suggestions? One thing will be a device to clamp some vise grips. This is one down fall to a stand, there is no bench to lay tools on. BUT I can move it where ever I want. Roll it for short runs, but it takes a dolly to go far. It weighs about 200lbs. And will weigh even more when I fill the base with concrete.

Worked on my new to me Bridgeport last night until almost midnight. Went to town on the ways and table, trying to get rid of the years of gunk. It's not pristine, but definitely usable and getting to point where I don't get dirty from just looking at it.

Also dragged my RPC over to my buddies house that brought home the Index to fire his up. It runs really nice. Just a short clip, checking the spindle and power feeds.

I put up a 24 foot run of T8 florescent lights (12 4 foot lamps) down one side of my shop. The T8s are way superior to the old T12s. I'm going to do the other side when funds permit.

Pulled the clamps off the workbench top, sanded it a little, screwed it down to the cabinet, then filled the holes with wood putty, then sanded again.

Put the knobs on the drawers, trimmed it out, and reorganized the pegboard too.
Ignore the mess

Then finally added a coat of stain.

I'm gonna poly it tomorrow.

In case you're wondering what that rope is, it's for my kayak hoist.

Ugh my garage is a complete and utter train wreck. Hopefully I'll get it cleaned up and organized by this weekend.

Haha I'm always "cleaning" and reorganizing in there. I wish I had a basement so I could have a dedicated workshop.

Spent 4hrs welding and assemble the workbench frame. Forgot to wear the respirator or mask when welding the galvanized steel yesterday. Throat is dry and irritating. Spent too much time welding because of my welder limitation (90A) - had to heat the metal b4 welding it.

The progress so far, in photo, is great - all plumbed and squared. I will house only three 26" Husky tool boxes with 31" of separation b/t the set. The full length of workbench will be 8' long with about 3-5" overhang.

The to-do list:

1. 4 more legs for 3rd box on right
2. fit test
3. detail welding to aid assembly/disassembly
4. install outlets and air on legs
5. run air and power
5. workbench top
6. prep frame for paint
7. Reassemble

Galvie poisoning is nasty stuff. Make sure you clean you're weld areas thoroughly and work in an area with lots of ventilation. Fortunately there doesn't appear to be long term effects from it.

Had a buddy come over last night to pick up some mismatch wheels for his 914 so he could pull his r-comps off for the winter... It ended up turning into a 3 hour BS session while getting some tinkering done on my '76. Got wheels swapped around, steering column & wheel installed and started polishing a corner of the front bonnet.

I have been waiting for a camshaft and rockers from Webcams for a customers Honda TRX700XX and they finally showed up Monday. I installed the head on Tuesday night and cleaned a few parts, for the second time it has been so long waiting on parts.

Last night I was able to install and dial in the camshaft, camshaft bearings rockers, rocker cover and chain tensioner. Tonight I should be able to almost finish it up and get it ready to fire. I would really like to have this thing gone by the weekend.

Here is the reason why he brought it to me. He hadn't checked the oil level in a while and it ran low, way low, like maybe a quarter of a pint when I drained it upon teardown. This is what it did to the camshaft and rockers.

Get a spray bottle of WD-40 and soak the mill down good. It will loosen all of the years of gunk and grime.

So, what's your trick for spacing/aligning the drawer slides so everything lines up nicely?

Tip 1: Wait until the drawers are hung to attach the drawer fronts. The drawer boxes are made from 1/2" ply and the fronts are 3/4" ply.

Tip 2: Attach the slides to the cabinet first and worry about the drawers as you go.

Tip 3. The drawer side of the slide has grooves/channels to allow for slight adjustments once you've hung them.

I'm sure there's probably an easier way but here's what I did:


It didn't really matter where on the drawer I put the slide so I just picked where I wanted it. Then transfered those measurements to the cabinet box. For example: My bottom drawer is 9" deep so I decided I wanted the slide around 3" on the drawer side. So on the inside of the cabinet, I measured up 3" from the bottom and marked a line across the depth of the cabinet as a reference point to line up the bottom of the slide. I repeated this process from each drawer accounting for the dept of the drawer and it's relation to what I had left.

Once I got the slides mounted to cabinet, then I worked on hanging the drawers.

Starting from the bottom drawer and working up, I placed a 1/4" shim (scrap piece of luan) on the cabinet bottom to space it off the bottom. Then set the bottom drawer on the shim. Place it about 6" out of the cabinet as if the drawer was slightly open. Made sure it was level obviously. Then pulled drawer side of the slide out and aligned it with the front of the cabinet box then screwed the slide to cabinet, screwing the front screw in first, then the middle screws. Once The front and middle screws are in on both sides, you can fully extend the drawer open, remove your spacer blocks and screw in the back screw.

I repeated this process for each drawer using blocks of wood to space them appropriately. Checking level on each drawer and making adjustments as necessary with shims. In theory, if your bottom drawer is hung level, then all the drawers after that should be if you "build" off of that one. Kinda like hanging siding or laying brick. Getting the first course level is key.

Once all the drawers were hung, I attached the drawer fronts. I set the bottom drawer front making sure to get my edges flush and checking level, then tacked it on with my brad nailer. Then using a strip of 1/4" luan to space the drawer gaps all the same, I worked my way up tacking each drawer front on. Once they were all tacked on, I came back with screws and screwed them on from the inside.

When I build things, I draw up basic design and measurements ahead of time and adjust things as I go to make up for "real life".

I built a medium duty portable fab table that attaches to my pedestal vise. Ill likely drill a 2" hole in it and mounting points for when I work on small engines that are not mounted on the equipment.

First post here. Sold my used stack of entry level Craftsman cabinets and drawers on Craigslist last night and found this forum while doing research for my new replacement. Thinking about going the Harbor Freight route for the 44" base for now and depending on how easy it is, breaking it down and painting with a lime green engine enamel for a long lasting finish. I was busy! Painted the walls KTM orange and grey with a white strip. Laid down my Racedeck I ordered on the Black Friday sale, and started building my work bench. Its all 2x4 framed and some black melamine on top. Still have a lot to do, building shelves, drawers, some wall hanging cabinets and going to stain it all black I think, maybe paint it.
