Hardware for Simonsen?

I was going to ask if anyone recognized this box but unsurprisingly I already learned a bunch just by scanning this thread (post #12). I picked up this well built Simonsen over the weekend. Anybody know a good source for replacement latches?

Here's a duplex box from the late '40's or early '50's. The decal says Duplex New York. This was a box my father had when he was a Ford mechanic. Any more info? I think Snap-on had a similar design.

Pictures didn't upload. Probably too, large.

Rusty, nice box there! I just picked up some replacement latches from the hardware section at lowes. They are an almost exact match for a Kennedy box I have, a little different shape than yours but I'm sure another brand at another store could be found if you want exact.

runsub5, nice box, do you have any pics opened up?

It's not really rusty at all. A little surface rust around hindges. It was really greasy inside and out. I am still working on cleaning it up. I can't really tell if the color is dark green or black. It's in excellent condition. Are there alot of these around?

He was talking to Rusty Musket; The last line was to you.

That resembles several boxes I've seen in this thread... possibly Duplex made them for others? :dunno:

Get some pics up with it open.

Here are a few more with the box open. It's still a little greasy inside as I haven't finished cleaning it up.

Thanks for the hardware tip nine4. I will check it out.

RunSub5. That box is beautiful and a family heirloom makes it all that more special.

I scored this awesome 70's proto top box for $30 last summer, after I spotted it in the background of an ad. The previous owner said he had the bottom to match as well and he'd let me know when it was time to let it go.

Six months later and I just got back from his place again… this time with the other box he had promised! Really nice guy, let me have it for $25 and they're reunited again!

Really nice Protos!! I have an almost exact match to that bottom but it was from a state hospital operating room.

Toolhunter - I like the top you added. What is it made of (... appears to be rubber).

A 45 year old redhead rolled into my life last weekend through a personal ad on Craigslist.

The top is a KRA 61B "Super Chest" with a date stamp on 1967. Under the lid was a small nice suprise of 10 drawer removal tools that were probably thrown in by the salesman as a free with purchase.

The bottom is a 1967 KRA 300B "Rolla Bench" that I have been looking for ever since I stumbled on this thread/ website. I almost drove to Utah to buy one of these 6 months ago and this one was 5 miles from my house. $500.

Those boxes are different "vintage" however, the top box may have stamping on the on the inside of the drawer behind the badge.

My other box is stamped like this but with 58 which I believe is 1958.

Thanks! Mine is like the picture you posted and even has "59" stamped. Assume it was from 1959.

Very nice. I've been on the lookout for one of those rollers as well. Didn't know that was their nickname.

That top box has the same layout as some the Hout toolboxes people have been posting lately.

Yep late 50's - I have a 58 with the red oval with the side tabs logo. The drawer layout is the same, but the Huots have the drop down drawer covers and these have the rear and side drawer interlocks inside.

Here's a Plomb 9998 tool chest my father purchased. Approximately 63 yrs. old. Paint faded but draws function perfectly. Still has small decal indicating where the box was purchased. These boxes are incredibly heavy. I am missing the keys. Are these available anywhere?

Thanks for the compliments on the Plomb box, guys. A lot of sentimental value. I worked out of this box as a kid with my father who was a Ford mechanic. I have some old Cornwell, Snap-on and craftsman tools inside. Only one or two Plomb sockets and Proto remaining as he probably wore them out.

If there is a number on the lock take the lock to a lock smith and they can cut you one. Even if there is no number, they can put in new plates to a key they cut.

Ordinarily with a missing key, I'd recommend getting a new cylinder, but in this case I'd spend the extra couple of bucks to keep it original.

It sounds like you are going to hang on to this until you can't any longer and I applaud you for that. People overlook sentimental value for dollar value too many times. Great old box to have!!! Wish more people would have taken care of them during their prime much like your father did. The quality shows in that even through it's patina.

Yes, I plan on keeping for as long as I can. I have no reason to sell it. As you say it has wonderful patina.

As you say, I do want to keep it original. I will not paint it either. Thanks for the advice on replacing the key. I will take your advice and get a key made. I am currently cleaning the interior along with the tools.
