I have a 2010 Explorer that is going out of warranty and need to know what wrench sizes I would likely encounter. All my sets stop at 18mm so I am pretty sure there is a need for larger. I am good on sockets but not wrenches.

19mm is obvious on pretty much any vehicle, but I rarely use wrenches anything above 14mm.

get 3/8 sockets up to 19 or 24mm and 1/2 up to 24mm and add random big size sockets.

My metric tool needs originated in the Japanese motorcycle business, where 19mm, 21mm and 23mm wrenches were the most used sizes above 18mm.
Since then, I have added a few others, as listed by senlow above.

I also added a metric 3/4" drive set from HF, that goes to 50mm.

All of them.

LOLOLOLOLZZZZZZZZ.

Dammit . I had the same answer.

:)

Ther IS not definitive answer as to what bolts and nuts the factory uses.
There IS a range, but all are within tolerance specs.
Head and nut sizes vary from year to year and make to make.

Thus.

No one or two tools.

Thus... see the Givl Reggin response.

I will look out for a set and add as needed I guess. I was just wondering if there was one or two that are commonly used on the suspension etc.

I regularly use wrenches up to 27mm.

I do use larger but not as often.

I dunno about the Exploder, but the newer F150 uses something huge for the front strut lower mount... 24mm or 27mm or something I think. Of course that big you can usually get away with using SAE anyway.

I have 5 sets that go to 32 mm with no skips. I seem to use all sizes on the farm machinery. I also have 36, 41, 46, and 50mm proto wrenches. I have 2 of each. I have used them all so it just depends on what you are working on. I have SAE wrenches to 2-1/2" It took me years to find them cheap. The most I paid for any large SAE is $7 and about $30 for the larger mm sizes.

I don't worry about the cars. I have had one electronic thing replace under warranty. I buy cars that are less than 2 years old and get them for less than half price. They always have very low miles on them. I do the repairs myself. The only thing I have had done in the past 20 years was to have my AC unit recharged after I put a new one on. I have the vacuume pump but did not have the Freon.

The bottom line is don't worry about it until you need the wrench the just buy one. Until then keep looking for supper deals and pick them up when you find them.

Way off this topic, but why let that stop me?

I needed a fan nut wrench for my 4.3 GM. My jaw dropped when I found that a stamped steel POS was $20.
My 1 1/4 HF wrench got a lot of grinding done to it.
Worked like a charm and I am unsure if it is a 36mm or 41mm, there is conflicting info on the internet, but lets just say I own the opposite of a "lobster claw" wrench now.:D

+1 ^^^ they are also very common sizes on compact Japanese tractors Yanmar, JD, Mitsubishi, etc.

I just finished overhauling a Pontiac 3.1 in a Grand Prix and am now working on a 4.3 in a GMC and found that I had to have an almost unbroken metric sockets and wrenches from 7mm to 39mm. Not to mention all the custom tooling I needed.

IMO, a metric set should include up to 27mm at minimum and preferably 32-36mm.
20mm optional.

I have use 22, 24, 26 on my varoius Fords at one time or another, FWIW.
