Re: what did you do in your garage today?
So to answer your question, yes its cosmetic but I double or triple-up the delicate edges. The rivets i use are 1/8" x 5/8" so they hold very well in the
Plywood base. On the wall cabinet i made first, I made sure to "hook" all of the aluminum and the rivets in fact were mostly decorative as most of the flasings nested into each other.
Don't forget, I am not a mechanic and don't use the garage to make a living and after a lifetime of being messy and not finding my tools when I needed them, I just had to do something to stay organized (and also look good).
Hopefully this winter my production manager will show me how to use the rest of the machinery we have so all my drawers and cabinets will be made of metal.
That can wait for the next garage.
Have a great day

In my industry which is cladding, roofing and siding, we clad wood all the time for its protection. Here in northern Canada our temperature hits highs of 105 and lows of -40. We avoid painting wood because it just doesnt last. We normally use colored screws or colored aluminum nails for fascia and soffit work. You riveted the metal to... wood? I guess the rivets could stick in holes and kind of expand a little. It is only cosmetic, true.
