Re: what did you do in your garage today?

You riveted the metal to... wood? I guess the rivets could stick in holes and kind of expand a little. It is only cosmetic, true.
In my industry which is cladding, roofing and siding, we clad wood all the time for its protection. Here in northern Canada our temperature hits highs of 105 and lows of -40. We avoid painting wood because it just doesnt last. We normally use colored screws or colored aluminum nails for fascia and soffit work.
So to answer your question, yes its cosmetic but I double or triple-up the delicate edges. The rivets i use are 1/8" x 5/8" so they hold very well in the
Plywood base. On the wall cabinet i made first, I made sure to "hook" all of the aluminum and the rivets in fact were mostly decorative as most of the flasings nested into each other.
Don't forget, I am not a mechanic and don't use the garage to make a living and after a lifetime of being messy and not finding my tools when I needed them, I just had to do something to stay organized (and also look good).
Hopefully this winter my production manager will show me how to use the rest of the machinery we have so all my drawers and cabinets will be made of metal.
That can wait for the next garage.
Have a great day
Gio

That is AWESOME!

More details please? WHat brand is it? Do the speakers still work reasonably well? Did you refinish that wood case because it's beautiful.

Finished cladding my parts cabinet with my son. He doesn't appreciate the rivet gun pinch.
He said he will help again if I bring the pneumatic riveter home.

Tornadocaster,

I like the look. Really finishes off the tool nicely(certainly a garage tool in my mind).

Also kudos on having your son out there helping/learning.

BTW, what guage metal are the shelves?

I made mine out of my old drillpress stand and used OSB shelves/supports.

Yours looks much better.

The brand is: "Metz" and old established southern German brand (they are still around and make mainly high quality antennas now):

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/metz_3093d.html

The speakers look brand new and work like they look, just awesome after more than 60 yrs., i haven't touched the wood, it is original down to the last little screw.... bought it from a guy for 30$ (he wanted to part it out and sell the parts on ebay (WTF..) all original tubes ..... even the inside looks almost new and clean...

I used 3/4" plywood for the box and 1 middle shelf.
All the other shelves are scrap 18 gauge galvanized steel as this is about the thickest sheet we deal with.
All the cladding is .020 aluminum.
I used osb for the other wall cabinet I made.
Yours looks great and it definately keeps the cost down.
I'm just lucky I deal in these metals all day long.
You should see the bright red and polished decorative alum checkerplate I have.
I haven't had an opportunity on this build but we used it on my uncle's new 5- car garage.

Do your wood shelves slide out?
Mine don't. But like I mentioned for a project like this it was a balance of functinal vs practical

Cheers

Not my personal garage, this is a side job at the shop I work at, but today I hung this:

I'm on the tail end. It's already gotten tune up stuff, new distributor, electric water pump conversion, and the six speed conversion is 99% complete. Just putting it all back together in my spare time.

I hooked up my new plow and plowed the driveway. I'm not a fan of snow or winter. Happy birthday to me I guess.....

This weekend, I finally got the projects done, the garage cleaned/somewhat organized, and got a couple coats of paint on the new workbench I've been posting about recently.

Had to finish this project before I could start cleaning. It's a stage for a volunteer thing my fiancé and I participated in on Saturday. They were doing a bedroom makeover for a little girl who is less fortunate. She wanted a stage for a stool and a microphone.

Here's the perimeter of the base. I added a few cross braces after this.

Told my Dad I had a bunch of stickers/decals but I wasn't sure how I wanted to display them. Next thing I know he shows up with a piece of tinted plexiglass framed in some old fence pickets. Loaded it up with stickers and hung it up in the garage.

Changed my all seasons over to winters today (on the 300c), Hasn't hit below 0 consistently but I didn't want to get caught out since my all seasons are terrible at the slightest hint of snow or ice.

Also changed out the #6 spark plug and ignition coil on the wifes trailblazer. Wow, chevrolet engineers made some poor choices when they decided to put the #6 cylinder so far back that you cant reach it without using 2 elbows and a bunch of extensions.

My garage cleanup has come to a halt as a car has taken residence. I hope to have the car stripped and gone by the new year, but I probably kidding myself.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Got around to changing the T-12 ballasts and bulbs to T-8's in the main part of the shop, did one in the shed. WOW!!!:rocker:

Bought some T-8 ballasts off ebay, bulbs came from Lowe's. About 20.00 to do each fixture 8 ft. fixture.

Bought some 4 ft. drop-in ceiling type fixtures from Habitat For Humanity. Put those up in the wife's sewing/craft room. T-8's as well.

These are so much brighter it's almost difficult to look directly at them, which is hard not to do since they are so new.

So with all this new lighting, I cleaned up some parts of the shop that were "hidden".

Oh, and put the 40" flat screen in place. That's has been sitting to the side waiting on me, I guess. At any rate, the lighting upgrade is an inspiration to continue forward.

I got tired of using an old kitchen cabinet and half a storage shelf as a workbench so I bought a proper workbench and rearranged the garage.

Welcome to the "proud to be a man" club!! :bounce:

MacGiver - nice deal on the stage, GREAT transformation of the shop. I had thought about building drawers to store tools like that but I use my stuff so often I can't ever get them put away for very long!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I moved a shelf to the back of the garage behind my caddy. Put some detailing/car cleaning stuff in an old shallow tote I had to make it more handy. Moved misc junk and slid another shelf over to make a bit more space. Then took up alot of that space with the long neglected welding table project. Also picked out the uprights for my shop press from among my steel scraps. Still trying to figure out the base. I have enough stuff so I can make something work. But I need to get the table done first to do the press easier. Still lots of cleaning/organization to go.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

This weekend, I re-located my storage shelves in a different configuration - resulting in a storage / utility room (12' x 12'). Built an additional workbench so I could have a wrap around corner unit. Too exhausted to go back down. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

I didn't like having my storage shelves open with everything on display (unorganized). Plus, I bought a new compressor (IR - 3.5 hp - 60 gal) and hope the storage room will dampen some of the noise.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Swapped the front dif on my sons Tahoe. Seems the the vent plug came loose / out and ran a little low. Welded in the left axle. Turned the front rotors, new pads, one rusty calipar slide, so a pair of reman calipars later. And a reman steering gear and pitman arm.

Installed the Flowmaster cat back exhaust he had. And replaced the rear sway bar links & rear shocks.

Seems my little girl's Neon had a little water under it. Only to find it needs a water pump. Ok, it's 12.5 years from my last Neon timing belt project. Take a YouTube refresher. Only to F'up and break the timing belt cover. JUST LIKE I DID IN 1995 WHEN I DID THE FIRST ONE!!!

Had better luck this weekend being Mr. Goodwrench then Capt. Chrysler!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Drove to Manchester, dropped presents off to friends and family, got drunk in the evening with my wifes colleagues in town and ate a great italian meal, ate half a pig for sunday breakfast, picked the kids up from their aunt and uncles, dropped more gifts off, drove home, fell asleep in front of the TV. This week is even more full on, today pickup tree and put it up, clean house, tomorrow more cleaning and kids school play, more cleaning, wednesday in-laws arrive from Spain for two nights and the electricity company conveniently turns the electricity off all day from 9am to replace a transformer leaving us with no heat, no light, no oven and elderly in-laws one with emphysema and one with parkinsons, great!, friday In-laws leave at lunchtime, after school we drive down to my home town see friends family all weekend. About as much chance of me getting in the garage before christmas as there is of me winning a euromillions lottery rollover!
