Not sure of what you've got so guessing - shim stock.... or sand to length a bushing/washer(s) that's too long?
Hi ho,
So a couple pages back I posted a photo of a 4" vise I was thinkin' about purchasing... $30 later and it's in the shop. You got a steal for a quality vise for $30.00

Thanks! I think so too, although the real price was $50 since I had to pay $20 to have it shipped. They originally listed it as pick-up only, but even though they were in Conn. it would have cost more than that in fuel to go down there and back, so I got them to ship it instead - never hurts to ask!
Still, at $50 total I'm pretty happy with it so far. Hopefully that broken handle retainer screw will back out easy after a couple days in the electrolysis bath.
Oh, and I meant to ask:
@87Pomona - On that Reed 103g you restored on the previous page, did you remove the paint on the lettering to polish the casting and have it show through, or is that silver paint you applied to the letters over the grey? It looks really good!

Can anyone identify this old Prentiss Vise? I believe it says 822 on the side but it could be 622. I can't find any info about it searching online.

Try a home made penetrating oil of 50% acetone and 50% transmission fluid.

!! I'll leave my Chinese manufactured vise for that purpose.
Hi ho,
@nine4gmc - That looks an awful lot like a Bonney vise from around the turn of the century. I've been researching small clamp-style Stanley vises a bit lately which is why it seemed familiar to me. If it's a Bonney No. 01, then it should have 1-1/2" wide jaws, according to the ad I found...
Hope that helps,
-JeffK.

Does anyone have a suggestion of how I could get a new tab added to the side of this vice? It was cut off at some point, and the rest of the vice is in good condition so I'd like to be able to use it.
Otherwise I can just use the rear hole, and one side hole to keep it mounted, but I would really like to have the 3rd side anchored.
Maybe you can drill & tap some threaded rod into the underside for a 3rd mount. Put it as far to the left as possible to regain your stability triangle. You might even be able to weld one into the bottom so your modification would not been seen.

I recognized that welding a new piece isn't a great idea, so hopefully others have a suggestion?
If you have enough lip left you could fabricate a little clamp like this to hold it down.
.
yea i mean the vise is in awesome shape for its age no play, very smooth and heavy. i dont have alot room on my bench so it fits perfect. im very happy with it and no plans to restore it i like the look for now ill just give it a light cleaning and just lubricate the screw
(wondering if Autopts is forgetting me at Christmas just like last year)
Ha! That's me. I need to update those decals to the most recent versions. I offer a GJ discount.
I need to add all the other decals I've done, too. There are many.
