snap on f720 help

Hi all I am new to the board and have been lurking for a bit. I am just out of school and am in the process of getting some decent tools to aid in my car fixing and the like. Before i came here i had been using nothing but craftsman but have been really disappointed in their recent ratchets so its time to leave the darkside. So i went on ebay and just scored my first snap on ratchet a f720 and a breaker bar for 28 bucks.

Now I have an extremely noobie question, can someone give me the steps to rebuilding it. I want to open it up to clean it out as its in good shape but dirty and a bit girtty. I can get the screws out but its not like the craftsmans with the retainer clip so i don't really know where to go from here thanks for the help

Once you remove the screws the plate will come off and you can remove the gear, inspect the gear and pawl for chipped teeth, if it is not missing any teeth then grease or oil it and reassemble!! The pawl will not fall out on this model, the selector holds it all together!! When you get it if you have any questions please ask!!

When i can't get the cover plate to come off by tapping the ratchet on my desk, i put the screws in the front of the cover plate and pull it off. Works everytime. Clean it out with some brake cleaners and a rag, use a stiff brush on the pawl and gear, then coat with grease and put back in place.

Hey thanks a lot for your help maybe the dirt is just acting like glue i think someone tried to clean it with wd40 or something because there is just oily gunk in every crevice. I think it might be time for my first snap on bath

Well, depending how deep you want to go into it; its not too bad, for the basics. If you take off the cover/2 screws you can get the main gear out but not the: pawl, lever, spring and ball. If you want to totally strip the head you have to push the lever out of the center of the pawl (if my memory serves); then, everything comes apart including the spring/ball that can go flying! If you don't want to mess with it all just take the: cover, screw, main gear and clean everything the best you can with solvent or carb cleaner; then grease it and put everything back together. If there is something wrong with it; take it to your local dealer and he can rebuild it for free!

Got a pic?? Try grabbing the drive part of the ratchet with pliers and pulling.

I am trying with pliers i dont have a vice so its a little tough but that cover will not let go. I wonder can the ratchet know i was a former craftsman guy is this some form of snap on hazing for the new guy?

Sometimes, you can put the screws in a little and use them to push the cover off by hitting them with a mallet or a piece of wood or the top of your work bench. This tends to pop off the cover and then you have access to the main gear and internals.

The dust cover needs replaced anyways so hit that with a hammer.

Hey i just wanted to say thanks for your help. i got it open finally with some motivation from pliers and a hammer now off to the snap on site to buy some rebuild parts

No its actually in remarkable shape it was filthy but all the gears look to be totally fine. I am just going to buy some brake cleaner, replace the directional lever dust cover oil her up and be good to go

My sources tell me you're supposed to strike it with a hammer AFTER the cover plate is on. My sources tell me that it's not necessary to use a large center punch or pin punch, but I'm thinking I'd use my trusty 3/8" diameter pin punch.

I watched my SO dealer use a large center punch.

The dealers will mess it up!! They do not like messing with the dust cover's and piss and moan when they do, I'm a pro at it now

The dust cover just sits in place before you tap the bushing in; why would a dealer ***** about that?

Because you can damage it or install it crooked, one dealer I know will not mess with it. He will hand you a new ratchet before he drives a dust cover in.

FYI, it is easier to hold the ratchet on a flat hard surface and just use a hammer then to hold the ratchet and a punch and hammer.
