Anyone know of a good source for cheap lighting for the garage? Money is tight and I don't want to spend a bundle on light fixtures if I can help it...

Honestly, I have installed recessed fixtures in my garage and for the money they can't be beat. I got them at home depot for about $4 each, wire in cheap and they are BRIGHT. If you have access to the ceiling I highly recommend them.

How many would you install for a 24X14 garage bay? Do you have a link for the type that you used?

I got a bunch of t-8 fixtures on E-bay for cheap (about $5 each with shipping) They came out of a school.

Call around to some contractors and see if they have any used to sell. They may even give them to you, as they have to pay for disposal.

I scored several cheap as well, but what are you guys doing to hang them? My ceiling joists are 16", so they don't fit recessed. Are there any premade housings for these that look decent. I really don't want to build something for them.

The only problem I have with those cheap flourescent lights is they tend to not light when you turn them on. I bought some of those $10 ones from home depot and within a few months only half of them worked reliably.

I run the flourescent bulbs in my recessed lights and they work great, low energy costs too.

I've been using T8/T12 units with reflector from Home Depot - $8.77 each...but they switched to a T12 only unit. Been using the cheap units for ~6 months with no problems. Lowes has them too for same price but no reflector.
