So where can I find 18" deep shelving?

Hi,

So I have been looking around for shelving for my garages. I have a ton of wall space & was thinking that 18" deep shelves would be a good size. I think that 24" deep is a bit too deep.

I need a bunch of different sizes, 5 foot, 4 foot, etc. I bought an inexpensive home depot 3'x18"x7 feet or so. Its OK, kind of junky (why I would expect from HD). I have been looking on craigslist but my search of 'shelf, shelving, draw' doesnt get much in terms of results.

Where do I look? Used shelves are fine, I dont think I want to build them but maybe I should?

Any advice would be great.

Just buy some sheets of plywood and build them...you'll end up with exactly the size you want. Are you doing wall mounted shelves or free standing shelving units? Either way will work with plywood and you could get fancy and paint them or something.

Look for some used Lateral office cabinets. Most of those are 18" deep and reasonably priced,lockable and hides your mess. Best of all, they are built like tanks...I got all mine free, but you can buy these for $50 and up...

Most of the box stores sell 18" deep steel shelving units.

Bigger places, like used office supply places, sometimes have a lot from a closed business.

The business section on CL in my area often has large volumes of 12" and 18" deep shelving from closed auto dealerships or stores.

my vote is get the lateral file cabinets, less dust and dirt settling, cant see the piles of "stuff"

HD sells a nice steel free standing shelving unit that is 18" x 36" (I also believe the 24" x 48" versions are too deep...hard to get to stuff in the back). You can usually catch them on sale around Memorial Day (I did).

3/4 Cabinet Grade Plywood. Home Depot will even cut it for you. It works out nice to have 2-18" x 96" and 1-12" x 96" out of a Full Sheet to be able to cut to fit where you need them.

Have you looked at STORES? Menards has a wide choice of 16, 17, and 18 inch deep shelving.

If you want inexpensive extremely heavy duty 18 inch shelves, Do what I did. I found a local used/salvage store fixture dealer and bought single side gondola shelving like the stuff used in grocery stores. It comes in 3 and 4 ft lengths and shelves are fully adjustable. If I remember correctly, I think I paid 40.00 per section for grade B (more imperfections). You can't really overload this stuff.

I build my own.
2x4s and 1/2 plywood.
What I like is I can custom fit around windows, doors, etc.

I do paint the sheets and sticks white the day before fabrication.
The white makes it easy to find things and painting early makes it a whole lot easier.
You only have to paint the cut edges and ends after assembly.

There are several resellers in my area also, you can also find it on CL from time to time. Inexpensive used, and industrial grade product. I love this stuff. 'Lozier' is the brand I'm using.

What wii be the heaviest load on the shelf?
Free standing or wall supported?
And how much will you spend?

I will have to check out Lowes, do they sell or list it online? I dont think I have seen that in the rack storage section.

On a side note, what do you think is a fair price for this craigslist ad?

They want $150 per shelf, its 24" & not the 18" that I wanted & I think its overpriced. What is a trigger pull price or is that person to far away from being reasonable?
