small world, I was at that auction today in Rochester

Well, thank you for not bidding against me!

Did you buy anything>

I removed the vise from the bench and gave the bench to some guy who happened to be walking past...

Columbian 506M2.
The vise was free, sat outside for 10 years. Threw it in vinegar for a week and then painted it.

Nice Columbian! The 6" aren't too abundant and they're built pretty good, definitely a sweet acquisition for free!

Nice grinder by the way.

A little 1-1/4" "polish" style vise I picked up today, oh, and a stand for it!

EDIT Interesting little vise: those are steel jaw inserts in the Aluminum/Zamak jaws...

Hope someone can help me with Sat auction buy ($27.50)- auctioneer called it a railroad vise, the business owner was clueless except it was in the store when his Father bought the business in the early 1960s.

I used a heavy nylon brush to clean off the gunk, gloop, and gloup. Can not see any markings of any kind - perhaps some elbow grease with a wire brush will reveal some stampings, but nothing seem to be cast into the body.

This is a stationary front jaw vise, weighs in @ 95 lbs, has 6 inch jaws and opens to 8.5 inches (there is over an inch of screw in the hole at 8.5.)

The slot on the bottom starts at the end of the round hole in the rear and runs the length of the vise. It is a Tee slot.

I would greatly appreciate any info anyone can provide. If anyone has any questions, let me know.

BTW - sort of resembles some of the Polish made vise I've seen in posts here and it is similar to this one on fleabay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Giant-Bench...ovetail-Slide-Really-Heavy-Duty-/190662191264

Thanks!

Your baby vise looks to be the same as this one of mine. It's a good little vise. Mine has no ID info on it though.

No help here...but I think you really scored! That's real cool. One question, How do you mount it?

He said it had a tee slot but It looks more like it will fit a carriage bolt than a real tee bolt...

Definitely a specialty vise, and may have also been held in a rail type slot for some purpose.

On the way home from the auction I was thinking Tee nuts or a carriage bolts. But the more I look at it, the more I think about a rail system on a turntable. (outlawmws - you are reading my mind...) Got some small gauge track, a Burke Millrite, and the rest of the winter to think about it.

I have the same(maybe) vise in a 7" version, but don't know who made it. There were many similar vises sold in the 1870-1900 range from companies such as Union, Backus, and Millers Falls. I've never been able to find a match for this one, though. Yours is the fourth I've seen.

Old ads for similar vises sometimes showed them using square headed bolts for mounting. I haven't come up with a clever way to mount it. It's sitting on an old skateboard in the corner of my garage.

Here's a pic from when I first got it.

That came out very nice! What paint did you use...it's real shiny and looks thick. Brush on?

Its actually one coverage coat of rustoleum candy red from spray can then 3 thick coats of automotive 2part urethane clear. Its pretty durable stuff.

Here's one I just finished. It's a Columbian 204 1/2 that weighs in at 60 pounds.

It came from a shipyard and when I got it the whole thing was completely covered in 1/4" of dirt and grease. So much that I couldn't even tell what color it was. I had to wash my hands at least a dozen times during the tear down and degreasing. Once I got it cleaned up I realized that it looked better with the grime finish because somebody had spray painted it with the ugliest shade of gold I've ever seen. They painted everything too. Absolutely no effort was put into taping anything off. Quite a sight.

So I took it down to bare metal and painted it a dark grey hammer-tone. No damage anywhere and it was actually smooth sailing once I got it cleaned up. It works awesome and is ready for use.

I'm going to put it up for sale as soon as I can figure out a fair price.

How are people polishing up their vise handles and slide surfaces? I have a Rock Island 93 that I just got back from getting the slide crack repaired....getting ready to paint it and wanted to clean up the handle. Any suggestions would be awesome!

IDK if I do it right, but it works...I use a 6"/7"/8"wire wheel on the bench grinder, 4.5" wire wheel on the hand held Makita, and a 3" wire wheel w/ a 1/4" shank on a drill. Get all rust/crud off, then I do the same procedure with buffing wheels and compound.

BTW, how do you guys get inside the screw end that holds the handle? I get it dang close with the wire wheels, you cant see anything rusty/tarnished, but you know it's in there. Come to think of it, maybe a roll of emery/abrasive turned inside out on the handle and slid back and forth oughta work..:dunno:

Hmmm, the inland empire in a quick shot down the freeway from me. I wonder if ole Bill will buckle at the sight of a few hundreds waving in his face.

lol. NOPE. Not likely, he made it very clear that he won't take a penny less than $1k "because he's seen those pretty little Wilton bullet things go for $600 and this one is way bigger."

I swear he said this.

I could swear that I have seen that Rock Island on Ebay in the past....and it was high then too. Of course it didn't sell, if this is the same one.

Check out this beast on CL. $1,000!

"this vice is 34"long, 42"tall, 15"open jaws 8" wide. the plate it sits on 3ft by 4ft 1" thick 760 792 5626 Bill"

Just talked to Bill. It is a Hollands 18.

I was just about to post this lol

I wonder who it would be worth $1,000 to?

If I had the cash in hand, it would be awful tempting. Thankfully I'm far too poor. This vise hunting business is a sickness. :eyecrazy:

Here is my newest project i've decided to tackle, 3.5" Wilton Machinist Vise. I found this guy on ebay and got it for a fair price. It was missing the guts, swivel base and dust cap.

The only reason i was interested is because i have a matching 4" i just finished and an older 3.5" stationary jaw vise to use for parts.

I started to break the new vise down and this is what i saw behind the dust cap.

It appears the vise had spent some time under water and was frozen shut:shocking:

Good thing i have lots of big hammers and a hydraulic press:D

After some shots of Kroil and an extended period of cussing and hitting, the vise broke free.:rocker:

I can't believe how clean this thing is, aside from the rust due to the previous owner being a mermaid, but it has almost no damage anywhere.

The jaws don't have a single flattened tooth and the anvil surface is dent free. Some might show up when its completely stripped but that's it. Not too bad for a vise made in 1991
