40x64 Pole Barn in Iowa

I have started building my 40x64x14 pole barn and decided it is time to post some pics of the progress. Every thing so far has been done by my dad and my self with the occasional help from some friends and family. The building was designed at Menard's including insulating and white tin on the inside.

So far every thing has went good so no complaints on the kit so far. The crane with the post hole attachment I rented from a locale electrical company they use it to drill holes and install utility poles its called a digger derrick truck.

Are you talking about the way the trusses are designed? The trusses are roughly 2 feet taller than normal making my outside height actually 16 foot. the reason for this was to prevent having a knee brace on the inside to work around. (the knee brace is built into the truss) Menards and the locale pole barn builder told me that's what I needed to get rid of having it on the inside.

Those are Laminated poles that where pre built they are 2x6 boards treated on the bottom and untreated on the top with staggered joints that are reinforced with a steel plate and they are nailed together then the nails are formed into a rivet. The center top has a small piece that comes out to be cut down and then you set the truss in the center and nail it in.

A couple more pictures I finished all the framing except window and door locations and we have half the purlins on the roof. Hopefully the weather will stay nice this weekend so we can finish the purlins and start putting up some steel.

Looking at your bookshelf girts. I had by builder do that and also put a 2x4 on the outside of the girts to make them look like a "L". Then nailed the 2x4 into the girts. It keeps the girts from sagging over time and makes the building stronger. Plus it gives you a nice space between the tin and the frame work to run wires and such. I'd never put up a building with out doing bookshelf girts. Yours is looking nice good job.

lol Favorite color is orange and I race dirt track. The city will only allow me to build up to 1/3 of my lot size and i have a double lot so 40x64 was the biggest I could build.

couple of quick questions for you on your build, call it curiosity but when you put the poles in the ground do you secure them with concrete? and i see you are not using any sheathing on the exterior walls and was wondering why that was.

The poles are set on a concrete pad in the bottom of the hole then the holes are filled with a gravel dirt mix. and the no sheathing on the outside walls is part of the cost savings of a pole barn. they uses a diagonal brace in the corners to add strength then the framing, braces, and steel all tie together for the strength.

It finally started to warm up again allowing me to get the wainscot on one of the side walls, the first of four windows framed and the upper steel on that wall started.

Haven't updated for a while so I figured it was time. We have set up scaffolding to get the fascia board up on the end walls, installed my windows along the side wall and completed the J-trim around them, and installed the trim along the top of the side fascia board. I'm hoping to get more side steel hung this weekend and get the roof put on next week but the weather isn't cooperating with me it just snowed 8" Sunday night and there talking about possibly another snow storm next Monday.

I'm not exactly sure what the difference in price is when it came down to ordering it we had the overall price where I wanted it and I knew I wanted to eliminate the knee braces. I compared the truss prices that I paid with the first quote that I had got and there was only a 100 price difference between the two for all the trusses. I'm not sure how accurate that is as the first quote was five months before I ordered the building.

Over the weekend we got the rest of the North side wall steel up. I have the week off so i'm hoping to get the other side wall steel up depending on how much snow we get today.

Its been A wile since my last update. It seems all the weather wants to do the last month is rain and snow. We have got the side wall steel up on the south side wall, I am ready to install steel up on the back wall, and have got the south side of the roof up.

Finally had some good weather to be able to finish the roof so we took Thursday and Friday off work so we could have a long weekend to work on the building.

put the other side of the roof up on Thursday planing on putting the ridge vents on this week but its going to be a busy week.

Wanted to hang the steel on my back wall Friday but it was way to windy so had to find something else to do. Decided to get the front window framed in and the bottom steel started on the front wall.

Finally got some off the back wall steel up on Saturday before it got to windy and had to finish it up on Sunday. Also put up the sofit on the back wall.

We have only worked on it nights after work for a few hours when possible and weekends between snow storms and rain. The whole building is book shelf framing and that took a lot more time to do than standard pole barn construction but it makes finishing the inside a little easier and feels a lot solider. The holes where drilled on November 3 so we'v been working on it for 8 months with 90% of the time being just my dad and myself and its about enclosed.

Just about done with the outside only have a few things left to finish up. For now i'm going to start focusing on getting the cement in.
