PV Co. NY 155 Vise Clean up?

What would be the best way to clean or remove the rust on this PV Co. 155 vise? Do you think that the slide was polished when new? If so could it be polished again? And one more question what color would the vise have been new?

Another vote for the electro bath. Its the most gentle method, although its very slow.

Consider yourself lucky to have the thumb screw intact on your vise. I found that exact same vise in a junk pile while on vacation and never noticed the screw wasn't original until i opened my mail back home.

Do you know if they were painted when new and what color?

I have the same vice except it is the 152 model. I believe it to be in origianl condition. Everything except the jaws and screw are black. The black is worn in most areas but it is definately black. Even the slide is painted black. Hope this helps.

Just my 2 cents...I'd skip the electrolysis and go buy yourself a gallon of apple cider vinegar. Much easier to drop it in a bucket and walk away...and better results IMHO...

Do not use galvanized metal (zinc) or stainless steel (chromium) for the electrodes.

Regular mild steel that you have taken down to shinny steel with a wire wheel, grinder, or flap disk is all you need.

Hard to say how long to soak it..but what's good about the vinegar is you really can't screw the piece up. I've soaked old rusty axe heads for weeks and some slightly rusted tools for a day or so.

That's just Rustoleum rattle can flat black. Used a grey rattle can primer underneath. That pic is kind of crappy - it looks better "in person" I think...
