i thought i would pass this along.

i have a 15mm deep mac socket that is broken. since the mac guy doesn't stop at my shop i dropped it off at another shop. the guy calls me and told me the dealer said that he wouldn't warranty it because i wouldn't be happy with the replacement. i took that to mean that he wouldn't replace it with a us made mac socket.

i emailed mac to ask them if this was thier corporate policy two weeks ago and havn't heard any response. i guess mac doesn't care........maybe i'll throw it through the windshield of his truck when he drives by

Why don't you just send it in to MAC directly? Everyone here knows I hate MAC tools, but their corporate warranty and customer service were actually quite good.

Sounds to me like the guy is trying to warranty your MAC USA socket with one of the crappy new MAC edge sockets. AFAIK, the regular MAC sockets in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive are still made here.

I always just put it in a package and send it in and a week later a new one shows up by Fed Ex I have never gotten a RA number and never had a problem, if nothing else get a replacement socket and sell it to somebody else.

This whole thread comes down to my policy of never judging an entire tool company based on the merits of one single truck dealer; I'm just not that trigger happy.

Agreed, unfortunately for me though, I still have yet to have a really good MAC dealer. Still love the few items I have from them though.

This is Mac, not Matco. You just send the item in and they warranty them. You don't need a RA#. Matco is adamant about getting aRA#, but Mac doesn't do that. Send it in with a note and all your information, and they will take care of you.

I've dealt with Mac for many years and that has always been and still is their policy. When I tell you they are the best about returns, it is because they have been consistently good over decades. Everything else about them may absolutely stink, but their warranty works. My cousin was a Matco dealer so I have a fair bit of Matco. If you send something to them without a RA# you will be lucky if they don't throw it in the trash. They're not Bose (for Merk), but they aren't very flexible about returns.

I haven't been on a mac truck in probably over 10 years (no dealer in my area) but maybe it is like Matco, now; they sell the USA Matco hand tool line and the Silver Eagle Matco line. The Silver Eagle is cheaper and made overseas. Does Mac Tools have this dual high end domestic and economy import lines too?

Not really...most of the stuff they're selling as MAC is coming from overseas anyway...

So, the hand tools arn't made in USA anymore?

I bought a box of tools the other day with misc wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers etc. One of the wrenches was a Mac 13mm KnuckleSaver and there is no country of origin on the wrench just a US patent number, my guess is it is made in Taiwan.

Wrenches, sockets, ratchets USA. Screwdrivers are of the "assembled in USA of global components" I believe. Pliers are either Channellock rebadges, Knipex rebadges, or imports. And they now have the new Edge wrenches and sockets which are imports. I guess those could be the "economy line", but they are still expensive for what they are.

I just bought 13mm and 16mm MAC long KS wrenches this past June. They have USA right on 'em.

Some here, some there. It isn't anything like what it once was. I think it will just get worse with Stanley running the show. It's a good old company that is being run into the ground. A lot of Mac people wish that Mac Tools would have gone away rather than what has happened with Stanley.

Really? I just got the wrench out again to make sure I didn't make a mistake and the wrench says 13mm Mac Knuckle Saver on one side and the other side has the part number and US patent number does not say USA anywhere on the wrench.

As much as I use and depend on Mac tools, I have to save I'm in that camp.

Matco seems to be in the same boat. As long as they were sourced from Bonney they were great tools. But now? Who knows what you will get.

Now you have got me curious, I will have to check mine tomorrow when I get to work. Pretty sure they have USA on the back, I'll repost if otherwise.

Man yours might say and be made in USA, I'm not disputing your word, I know I wish mine said made in USA. Maybe they came from different factories, who knows. I will admit the wrench does feel pretty good in the hand, I kind of like it!

Just checked a XL 5/8" KS I have out in the garage. It is newer, not sure how new since I got it on ebay, but it says USA on the back right by the open end. So my guess is, either your wrench just wasn't stamped properly, or as you said, they have more than one factory making wrenches. In which case, that is crappy to sell the same tool made in country X for the same price as a wrench made here.

What area is in his route? Mine is out in Novi, Livonia, etc. Bob Stadler...Sadler.....not sure.:headscrat Anyways, doesn't keep alot on his truck and always seems to take 3 or 4 weeks to get stuff warrantied. My old MAC guys when I was working downriver kept pretty slim pickens on their trucks as well.

Agreed!! I sent in a 1/4 drive swivel socket a few months ago and within a week I had a replacement -- didn't even have to pay return postage.

I've sent in three sockets within the last two years and the process is always the same -- pretty good customer service as far as I'm concerned.

one more time merk..........he REFUSED to warranty it saying i would not be happy with the replacement :headscrat

He didn't say that straight to you; he said it to your buddy.

In any case, just box it up and send it in with a note explaining the circumstances and make sure you mention in the note what the MAC dealer's name is.

I can understand your frustration. I'm not sure how he knew the replacement was for you, and not for your buddy, but it sounds like he's being an a-hole to you based on his previous interaction with you.

Just do this and tell them exactly what you want. Don't worry yourself over a dealer who won't cooperate. Don't get all worked up. Forget the jerk even exists. It's Mac...the send it in thing is the biggest reason to buy.

Some dealers just don't have the money to keep a good inventory.

The Snap-on dealer in Clovis (Steve Dunlap) has a least 10 of everything. When he'd open a drawer of one of his boxes on the truck, you'd see cardboard trays lined up with 50 wrenches of each single size SO makes. The guy has every single hard line tool in the catalog times 50.

Exactly. Their slogan is "Customers For Life." And I think they might mean it.

Also, at the risk of being flamed.... I don't think that MAC or anyone else is required to swap a USA made part with a USA made part... if the same part # is now made in a different country, I don't see how anyone could demand one made in USA and have a leg to stand on.
