I was getting ready to go to the hardware store and was checking my email before I left. Decided to check CL real quick and this is the first thing I saw when i opened the tools section... I called the guy immediately and he had just posted it!

I just had to have it... went straight to the guys house and checked it out, motor is indeed toast, but the pump seemed fine and I will know about the tank when I can get it unloaded. The owner had a engine lift we used to load it, he even gave me a strap since I was short one(I insisted on paying for the strap). Now, is it just me, or is that a HUGE 7.5 motor?

Now I have to decide what to do with it, total rebuild or just get it running, 5hp motor or go back with the 7.5... :headscrat

Nice score, I'm currently searching for a compressor and for that price you ****. Even if the motor is bad the pump and tank are well worth the money

I would go with a 5hp motor unless you can get a7.5 cheap enough. I would check your local armature shop to see what they have. Many people drop off motors to have rebuilt and never pick them up.

That's a great buy man.
As for the motor. 7.5 would be sweet. As long as you can supply the power it will need for startup and running.

It's relatively rare for an induction motor to have a winding failure besides gross overloading. More than likely either the centrifugal starting switch or the start capacitor has failed. Check those items before you condemn the motor.

I would stay w/the 7.5 and keep the current configuration. It was built this way for a reason, why would you want to run a smaller motor ?

Even if it costs a few hundred to fix your still money ahead.I think this compressor would be $1800- $2200 new.

this is a ~$2k compressor- I have the same one. Even with a junk motor, it's still a great deal. If the pump needs work, Quincy is a "real" company and I'm sure you'll be able to get parts from them; as opposed to something that was bought at Home Depot.

Why do people think a 5 hp motor will successfully drive that giant pump? Why not tell him to put a 2 HP on it as it's even cheaper than a 5 HP???

edit: not that it matters, but I wonder if that's the original motor? Mine was painted blue- the entire unit was painted after assy

I agree..That's what the MFG put on it, that's what I would stay with...Kinda like pulling out a Hemi 440 and dropping in a 350 chevy...

The Quincy brochure for the QT series says the QT-7.5 can be run with a 5-7.5 HP motor.

I wish I could use 3 phase, but Im all set up for 240 single phase(actually 266 volts). I can get electric motors at cost so hopefully the 7.5 won't be to much. After thinking about it overnight I am leaning towards a total rebuild then fresh paint and decals.

I had to make several stops on my way home. Two guys at walmart, one on the way in and one on the way out, were congradulating me on the compressor and another at the gas station. None of my friends or family are tool intelligent... So I inevitably get the same responce..."What did you buy that old compressor for?"

I got several attaboys on the way home from complete strangers, and lots of why's and what for's when I got home, sure does make me wish there was a place I could go that had like minded people to discuss tools...

Oh, and why the hell does Krystal have a 8'6" clearence sign right there where you order, yet there is nothing else that you drive under? They now have a mangled clearance sign hanging by only one chain now... damn thing scratched my compressor!

Well hell yes, since you scored such a great deal (YOU **** BY THE WAY), and since you can get the motor at cost (LUCKY DEVIL!), you owe us like-minded-people a rebuild thread! Maybe you can just continue this thread with all the rebuild pics, problems, and posts of your efforts.

While you're doing the total rebuild on that compressor you STOLE, you might as well spend the money you saved on it to buy all the other goodies to make a shop system to be proud of. We 'like-minded-people' are looking forward to your progress pics of the 'compressor shed build', the 'shop air supply pipe install', the 'auto drain install', the 'intra-cooler build/install', and the 'intake-muffler-mod' as well. Considering that unit's MSRP is $2.7k, and that you only shelled out $150.00, I figure you've got a budget of about $2500.00 to spend on the rebuild/shop system to make us 'like-minded-people' stop saying 'YOU ****' to other phrases such as 'YOU RULE!', 'AWESOME WORK DUDE', and 'SMART MOVE ON BUYING THAT OLD COMPRESSOR!'. LOL

That is too good for a You ****. That rates a Major You ****. Good Luck with it. I have had a QT-5 for about 17 years and it still looks and runs like new.

I can't find my megger, but I did check the ohm's on the windings, the motor checked ok. The capacitors are fried and so is the starter. I will see about getting some more capcitors and trying to run it.

Anyyone know of an online retailer for Quincy QT overhaul kits? Only one I could find was for the QT-5 and it was over $400! I have a feeling it will be much higher at my local parts place.

With a megger you're ahead of most people.

Sounds like you have an easy fix there. Here's to hoping!

Nice deal, esp considering its a vertical tank. I see deals on Quincys fairly regularly, but unfortunately theyre always the dam horizontal tanks and I have a tall skinny location in mind for one. One of these days I just might break down and buy one to do a bit of tank swapping.

I talked to my local Quincy dealer, and according to the book they emailed me it is a 2000 model QT-7.5 AirMaster(not related to the current airmaster series). Although the book says it is pressure lubricated, I know it's not. I scoped the tank today, no rust in the bottom half but saw surface rust on the top half in a few spots, overall looks pretty good.

A complete overhaull kit will cost me close to $500 total, so I will disassemble the pump and order only what is needed if it is in good shape. I am still waiting on the capacitors to finish checking the motor...
