any reason to not use chrome sockets on 1/4"?
Honestly I have been using chrome 3/8's deep and short (craftsman) on my Cornwell 3/8 gun (lots of power) for over a year with no issues in socket deformation or damage. I even have chrome fills ins for missing impacts in my sets at work <shrug>. My 1/2" 15mm and 18mm are both chrome and get used everyday on the end of a earthquake 1/2" or air cat

Here are some good points/reasons to use impact sockets over chrome; basically, use the right tool for the job... the first injury you may have eliminates any "savings" you think you are enjoying:

I have a grey pneumatic set; works well and they can, in many cases take the place of a chrome set (thus, eliminate the need to have chrome and impact) sets. I noticed that even using my far25a; that it was affecting my 1/4 chrome sockets, affecting the square drive portion of the socket, deforming the metal.
The grey pneumatic sockets are very reasonably priced; if you don't want to buy a whole set, individuals are very inexpensive.

I wonder if the oem is the same? I got mine at the flea market for $60; so, I grabbed them, the grey warranty policies I didn't know about until later. Replacements are cheap; so, its not a major issue but it is kinda annoying.

That is identical to the Gearwrench set, besides the case.
I was kinda thinking the same thing. The only difference I could see was the laser etching on the Gearwrench stuff. And the fact the the Grey was $50 more. I wanted to buy this set for my cordless impact.
If Proto made them, those are the ones I'd get. Their impacts are excellent.

I heard with gearwrench you must return the socket to their store your purchased it from for warranty. they had discussed this in the Gearwrench vs. Sunnex impact thread the other day

I have the #9748 Grey Pneumatic set,no complaints yet holding up.I ordered my set at an Auto Value tech expo my father and I go to once a year,$112.95 and some change which was a good deal.Almost lost one socket in the set,I found it.
How is it complete with 10 SAE sizes vs 14 METRIC? Where are the others...
I can understand that some sizes are not as popular, it's just that a complete non-impact set would often have 14 or more SAE/USC sockets in 1/4" drive. There's an 11pc impact set with an 1/8" socket in there, yet it's missing the other four too (5/32, 13/32, 15/32, 17/32). It looks like some of those are made for other drive sizes, so I have to wonder if they're omitting them to require a set in each drive to complete it somehow. Well I don't especially care, just looked at these for a less slippery finish than polished ones, but I can handle those more carefully, since I'd surely lose some this way.

It depends on what you work on. That set and many others, are geared toward Auto Techs that don't the funky sized sockets ending in 32nds.
SAE sizes are mostly gone from late model cars. I for one, would avoid any set that was SAE heavy.
Gearwrench, Grey Pneumatic, and Sunex impact sockets are not made in the same factory. Their sets often contain the same size offerings and are all black but, that's about all they have in common.
Aside from the obvious laser etching, stamped or not stamped size markings. there are other differences such as chamfered versus non chamfered square drive ends, the thickness, width, and shape of the collar on swivel sockets, and the depth of broaching along with off corner engagement on the socket ends. I thought for years that all of the Taiwan made impact sets came out of the same factory and only the color of the box was changed but, after acquiring sets from most of the different manufacturers, there is a difference

I have shallow snap on, swivel sk and a some Makita shallows never needed deep.

Grainger carries individual sockets made by Proto, SK or Westward. It might be more cost effective to get an entire set. I'd start with the deep set and then get the shallow sockets.

No extensions, no u-joint, and I don't like the tapered ends on the small shallow sockets; that's the same problem with the low-end Grey Pneumatic sets.

That gearwrench set mentioned above is an excellent set. I have it and the swivels are my most used sockets from the set.

Correcting my statement from long ago, not the same.That is identical to the Gearwrench set, besides the case.
All the same sizes and pieces included, but the Grey set has the stepped down ends, which I prefer.
Still using the hell out of my GW set though, replaced one lost socket, and nothing broken or worn out.

No extensions, no u-joint, and I don't like the tapered ends on the small shallow sockets; that's the same problem with the low-end Grey Pneumatic sets.
For me, the problem with sets like that, its forcing me to pay for a set of SAE sockets which its very rare that i would even use. but thats just me, i agree that lots of people still use SAE, i however do not use anything but metric.

Sunex is great I have thier 1/2 deep master set and flip sockets, the 1/4 set is nice too but I would buy only metric you will never need sae.

I use SAE, though, especially in small sizes; small engine work.
