I know I have an addiction to anything car related especially tools and shop equipment.
I saw this ad on CL and I want to jump at it! Am I right to think this is a great deal and worth way more than $695?

Here is the description:
snap-on tool box and tools - $695
This is a used " Snap-On " tool box ( 50 inches long x 27 inches wide x 39 inches high). The front of the box has six drawers and a fold down table. There are also six drawers on the left side of the box. The box has the locks and keys it comes with.

Also included are a variety of tools including: 1/4"drive set, 1/2" drive set, 3/4 " drive set, combo wrenches.

Thoughts??

I'm gonna go check it out later today. I asked the owner if all the tools in it are Snap-On and he said there are tools in every drawer and there are some Cornwell, Matco, and the like.

It's a KR-562 that has been repainted--the famous 'Taco Wagon'--check for rust, drawer function etc. Those boxes go for $600 to $1200 in my area without tools.

Big wrenches look like harbor freight. It does have some nice 3/4 stuff (snap on 3/4 ratchet head?, Wright 3/4 ratchet, assortment of sockets. I'd say at all the money in tools is the 3/4 stuff. Personally I'd pass on this collection unless you need the 3/4 stuff and even then I'd hope to get it for much less than $700.

I would put all of your value in the box and draw your own conclusion from there. I bet all of the tools are SAE and if you are looking to keep I'm sure you are flush with standard and if you are flipping then good luck.

I'd dicker, offer less, but probably pay his asking if I had to. Every tool guy should own a taco cart at some point. Most sell them eventually, but for some, you'd have to pry it from his cold, dead, etc.

IMHO, there's never a good reason for a red box to get a black rattle can spray, but being stolen is often the real reason.

It looks like generic tools and a beat up box with a crappy Krylon paint job.

If all you want is tool storage it's probably a good buy. If you want something to be proud to own then keep looking.

"Tools in every drawer"

I would wonder what is in the other 9 drawers not shown in the ad? Go look at it in person, then decide. Pictures can and usually are really hard to base a purchase like this on.

a taco wagon complete with keys? get your *** over there with cash and cut a deal for something less. sell the odds and ends and you will probably have way less than 500 in it.

I'd be in on that deal at $400-450 tops, and that's a stretch. That's about all a repainted Snap-On box would be worth. Takes a real power house of intelligence to paint a red box black.

I don't see much value for the tools.

I've never had a "Taco" box, but I can see some serious limitations where it can be placed in a shop for complete access.

So I went to go check it out and the box is in pretty good shape. All the drawers work just fine. The casters roll ok and the brake works well too. There are Sap-On, Craftsman, Cornwell, Matco, OTC, and cheapie tools all mixed in there. The socket sets are Craftsman, the Big-o ratchets are Cornwell including the one that the head comes off the handle. There are also some MIT brand wrenches. I've never heard of that brand...sound kind of cheapie to me. I did like the fact the man is gonna include a set of 4 Rigid pipe wrenches.

He won't go lower than $600. But this box will come in handy in my shop so I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

If you did but it, I think its a great deal. The functionality of the tools and the box is what counts. Yes i agree with some of the others about other prices etc. But if that's the case we can all wait until everyone lowers their price. Then you can only hope that you still have the money to buy it.

Well, I did it. I went over and brought it home. I really bought it because I needed more toolbox space and because of the functionality of the cart. I like that I can wheel it over to where I am working and use it as a work station. It is going to work just fine in my new shop/garage when we build our new home this year.
It is not in bad shape at all. The drawers and casters work well too. I think the tools and all the extra stuff the old guy threw in are just a bonus. I think I got a fair deal.

I'll post up pics of the tools and extra stuff later today.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

What a bunch of naysayers:eyecrazy:

I buy and sell tools, did over $80K last year in sales and I would have jumped all over that deal and made money. Yeah the box may not be pretty but if it is functional, it would bring $700 by itself. The Snappy ratchet head is worth $90. Each of the 3/4 sockets is minimum of $10 each if US made and if truck brand, $20 to $30. The Chicrap big wrenches bring $8 each, cman socket sets bring from 10 to 30 bucks each and on and on.

They say there is and *** for every seat. Not everybody wants, cares or can afford to have pretty "something to be proud of" tools and boxes. They just need to get the job done.

To the OP,,,,,,WELL DONE,,, you got a great deal on the box and tools. Enjoy!!

Now to be fair, I sell my tools out of a store that is inside my pressure washer showroom and warehouse. So, I have an outlet for resale that most don't, but I sell lots of SAE tools. Remember, not everyone turns wrenches on late model cars and equipment. There are lots of guys who still work on older equipment that require SAE. And young mechanics need inexpensive quality tools. Then they can upgrade over time. I have that stuff too.

I don't think you did too bad. A Taco wagon in black looks pretty cool - a better paint job and it would look great.

There's probably a good chance the OP can remove that ugly black paint without harming the original factory red. I'd try some lacquer thinner in a inconspicuous spot. (factory paint is much tougher then Krylon)

Not everyone sees the same thing when they look at a tool box. A friend of mine won't buy any tool used. He wants virgin. Only drives new BMWs.

Some want what they think other people will admire. As an example, a CA guy I know thinks he's into hot rods. Ten years ago, the hot rod fad was shiny, smooth and billet. He paid $75K for a top-name-shop-built show rod. Just last week he sent me photos of his new build. He paid another shop another $25K to erase everything the first shop did, re-paint it flat, take off the billet, the chrome and make it into a barn-find-rat-look-rod.

Sk, they just got my goat. OP made an outstanding purchase and guys are saying it ain't pretty enough for them. If you don't like, that's ok, but don't rain on the guys parade. Say, not my cup of tea, but glad you like it, enjoy, or just say congrats. Or say nothing negative at all. Just my opinion

Finally got out to the garage today and took inventory of all the stuff that came with my new box. Along with several stacks of shop manuals, a Craftsman shop creeper, came all these tools pictured below.

There are some Chinese stuff, Craftsman, Proto, SK, Husky, Cornwell, MIT, Mac, JH Williams and even a set of International Harvester 3/4 inch drive sockets and ratchet.

I'm pretty happy with all I got....I thought I would share the pics.

At first I didn't think this was too good a deal, but looking at what was in the box sweetened up this deal. Those pullers and bearing separator look expensive. Big sockets are expensive. Some serious stuff there.
