Was in the local tool store killing time today. Saw a CH 80g compressor, referbished for $669. Good buy or no? At home, all I have is a 2hp 8g pos that can hardy blow my bench clean. Most I would use is a 1/2 impact so Im sure it would handle that no matter the motor, which I never noticed what size it was

Is it a single stage or two stage? If it is a 110v unit it is probably single stage and probably not that great of a deal...

Tank size is the least important part of a compressor. Can you link to the model somewhere?

What should someone be looking for in a compressor then? Sorry I'm new to compressors and want to get a good one in the near future.

I've personally never seen an 80G 110v compressor...

It's likely one of the ~15cfm base model 2 stages.

That's not a terrible deal, if it comes with warranty etc. Would let you expand your air tool collection quite easily. Air grinders and paint guns come in handy.

CFM and duty cycle. CFM is how much air it can put out at a given pressure, most tools use ~90 psi, so the rating at 90 or 100 is the one that counts.

After that, check things like reviews to see if it's a lemon or has issues, like any other power tool.

Also, don't forget that to make optimal use of the thing, you'll need to run some lines, get a regulator/filter. You CAN use it right off the compressor, but you'll get lots of water in the lines and unregulated pressure to tools, especially if thats a 175psi model, could cause issues. That is nearly double the average tools rating so they might not take it well.

Start with cast iron pump, belt drive and oil lubrication.

Some of the larger compressors are now coming out with cheap direct drive pumps - avoid these!!

Look at CFM at 90 PSI and compare that to the tools you'll be using. You want more capacity for continuous but can get by with less for burst. (an impact wrench is usually burst). Ignore HP because most manufacturers lie about ratings. (ex: Sears)

Look for 2 stage and an ASME certified tank. After that just read the reviews.

Some of the new compressors have real crappy regulators and pressure switches.

In the long run, an older ugly Quincy, IR, Curtis or other name brand will outlast
anything new from the box stores. Just look at your local Craigslist daily until
you find a deal.

If you live in a residential area, you can't get 3 phase to your house. You will have to either change the motor, or get a phase converter.

Should say right on the motor plate. I believe that the voltage range will be higher as well 208-230/460. On the motor tag look for the word "phase" and it should either be a 1 or a 3.

That's not a bad deal. I recently went to look at a used one with the same specs.. He was asking $800.00. Probably around $1,500. new.

See the picture for that model number...
