Holy hell I finally have my own garage...

I've rented for the last 14 years. I've lurked the forum for a long time as well. I've never had a garage of my own, and I've always had to suffer with awful insulation, no heat, no space, cracked floors, and other peoples or landlords problems. Here are some of the garages I've had in the past:

the tiny garage:

no insulation, cracked floors, nothing was level:

I liked this one actually, but not mine. couldnt modify:

this was my only tuck under. not too bad. 2 car+ deep. But again, couldnt modify.

there were more, but thats all I can find pictures of currently. We finally got a house and here is the new garage!

Its a 3 car oversized. I think its about 30x25 if I recall correctly. It has a finished upper level with carpet, internet, and cable TV. I started insulating right away...it doesn't have heat yet, but I did insulate half of it, and get my work area sorted out. I also added an 8' T5 light. Its awesome. It has a finished and carpeted/insulated/internet/cable loft above. Need to get organized so I can use that this summer. I want to get the walls and ceiling done so I can build shelves into the ceiling at the walls. I got one quote for 1600 and one for 2200 to finish up the walls and ceiling with drywall. I want drywall for most of it, and I did OSB by the work area. I figure it was a good compromise between fire retardation and utility.

I built a wall so I could make an L shaped workbench:

8425049562_36b907053f_b.jpg

T5 light installed. nuclear brightness. its amazing. you can never have too much light.

8425050090_8c5b1e6a7f_b.jpg

workbench and cabinets installed. the cabinets are medical cabinets from a local salvage place. I used hardwood plywood for the bench top, but may get a stainless L cut for it. I'm not sure.

8423961383_f1b965f8ab_b.jpg

this is it so far. its winter so I cant really have heat. I thought about trying to dig a trench but it just doesn't seem worth the effort. the back side of the garage has a patio, so running the line is going to be a pain. The garage has 100 amp service in its own box.

Any criticism, advice, or ideas are welcome! I'll update the thread as I go along...

The staircase is pretty cool. I started staining it and it was just too cold. I'll have to wait till spring. The question is what kind of railing? I was thinking galvanized pipe with loops on top that screw into brackets I mount on the side. that way I can take them off if I want to get something bigger upstairs?

Congrats. on your shop. You have a very nice place to wrench and hang out with your rides.

Thanks!

Is it a carbureted 16v-engine in the green rabbit? 1,8 or 2,0L?

its actually a 2.1. the head is a 16v, but the block is an AZG block out of a 2002 Golf 8v. It has the internal water pump engine basically. its high compression with ported heads and big cams as well. Quite a fun little engine.

I know. I have looked at the forum a lot. I always kinda try to find REAL garages that people actually work in -vs- ones with brand new cars in them where nothing occurs but detailing and oil changes.

Staircase really lovely... Best space upstairs, what there?

Upstairs is a full floor plan. Its basically a replica of what the top of the house is albeit a little smaller. its finished, drywalled, and painted. it has some strange green carpet. Its wired for cat5 and cable. It has 4 windows on each side. really a cool space. want to get a bathroom up there. I'll probably put a window unit in it for air conditioning for hanging out, and perhaps put some vents in the floor to pull the air down? I dont know. Lots of ideas.

Loved my 76 Mk1... Want another BAD!

I love mk1's, great cars. very easy to learn on and work with. a lot more so than 911's.

LOVE that staircase...tons of potential in that space.

can't wait till spring when I can start developing it. its just too cold.

congra .. iz that robbi or gti my uncle had a diesel one
1734070788_e581b4e88f_b.jpg

its a regular golf. it used to be a diesel but It ended up with a few different iterations of fast 16v's. It ended a very sad death by deer.

Anyone have input on heat? I had a crazy idea to bring a line in from the boiler in the house which is pretty big and put a register in the garage. I could put it on its own zone. Alternatively I thought a home furnace might be nice because I could heat upstairs and the garage itself, and perhaps add central air some day.

I thought it was code that you had to have drywall on anything that touches a living space, like your garage ceiling. Does that vary from state to state? Cool space, though. Congrats on finally having something you can make your own.

I think you are right. the ceiling and all walls other than the work bench area are going to be fire rated drywall. I dont know if it qualifies as a "livable" space up there though. I'll be putting up good fire rated thick stuff so I didnt check as I am doing drywall either way. I've had a carb catch on fire once. I know lots of guys just do OSB all over.... to me it's just not worth it. Fire in a garage is a scary situation. :shocking:

Man if anyone deserves a nice garage and workshop it is you my friend. That first place looked atrocious. Congrats on the space. Dig the workbench area too. It seems you might have some woodworking skills.

You might post some pics of your back patio that is slowing you down getting natural gas ran over to garage for heating.

It will cost some extra, but you could hire someone with a boring machine (ie like the telco's use to bore under roads for fiber optic, or sprinkler system installers use) and you just go under the patio or whatever concrete is "blocking" your proposed path for NG line. I've seen these in action and they're amazing!! They can hit a 2 ft square target after boring for 500 ft !! . . . . so your patio obstacle is no problem. Typical machine is either a Ditch Witch or Vermeer.

Great space you've got there (both below, and upper "living" quarters). You might see if those Mitsubishi air conditioning units could handle the separate spaces without allowing fumes from car area reaching the upper area.

Keep the pics coming . . . and tell us more about the Porsche!!

I'm not saying this out of jelousey or anything but, that spiral staircase is gonna be hell to get the man cave furniture upstairs. Maybe a straight staircase on the other end of the garage and a firemans pole in place of the spiral one?:D

That might be a reach, I've only built that wall, and the work bench. I didnt even have a circular saw before the other day!

congrat's .....you have tons of room now ...

we'll see how long it takes me to fill it up with that stuff

I'll get a pic of that tomorrow in the light. Which porsche? :p

Well, it crossed my mind, but I think thats why I'll make the railing removable. :)

you can read another bit I wrote about the car here:

http://www.stanceworks.com/2012/10/why-im-here-an-introduction-by-kris-clewell/

I cant find the third and final installment... needless to say I sold it to get a long hood early car. I had the disease.

it used to look like this:

8167833207_e611e24b41_c.jpg

now it looks like this:

https://sphotos-a.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/45335_10152317825385111_141523116_n.jpg

just trying to make it not a "fake" Carrera and be a bit more honest about the car. its getting there.

Congratulations! Looks like it's a great space.
I just installed six T5's in my garage, I swear you could perform surgery in there. Love them!
Enjoy!

Are you in Minnesota? I'm betting those cabinets came out of Bauer Bros. I wrestled with buying them for several hours one day.

Great pics, and reads! Thank you!

no problem. :)

What no love for the W123??

I love the thing. went to prom in it in 1999. Been restoring it and making it nice for my grandpa. still needs a few things.

yep I am! They still have a ton more. I got one free for buying all of those. Then I also got the orange ones. They negotiate if you ask... I also tip the guys that help load every time I go. They are nice dudes, and also the ones that take your money if you pay in cash. The thing is some of the cabinets dont open, some are locked, some are rusty in spots. You really gotta check them out first... the white one is a narcotics cabinet and it is tamper proof. It has a safe inside!

I have a friend that lives in now then. love the name of that town!

Good luck on making the garage how you want it.

Yeah, we like Dubs . . . even the Porsche! :)

About the spiral staircase, I'd just leave it and cure the furniture moving problem with a nice sliding door on an upstairs outdoor balcony. Those are great for getting in full sheetrocks if you have work still needed up there, plus that might provide the upstairs with an emergency exit in case of fire.

Congrats on the sweet looking shop! Looks like lots of potential.

Loving the V dub with the corrado steelies and the 911s.

Suggestion for your spiral staircse, a wrought iron handrail would look good.

I'd love to do that, but I feel like I have to do something removable. I thought galvanized pipe with a foot that it screws into, and loops on the top. then thick rope running through the loops. :headscrat

Looks like a solid start. Going from renting a spot to a over sized 3 car is like all of your childhood Christmas' wrapped up into one.

I'm screwed then.

Can't argue with that. :) I just wish it was summer so I could spend some more time out there.

That's a great space!

Any pics of the upstairs too?

here ya go! this is from the top of the stairs. I need to get shelves up downstairs so I can NOT use this upper area for storage, either that or I need to put up another wall that I turn into a "parts department".

Congrats on the new house and garage. I believe when you have to wait to get your garage, you appreciate it more, I know I do.

One thing to keep in mind, any heat you put in the garage will rise into the upstairs area and vice versa if you put in a window AC unit upstairs. You may want to conside figuring out a way to close off the stairway but make it removeable to move large objects up or down.
