So I have a nice large Snap-On out at work and have been pretty spoiled with it. There's no way I can justify buying one for home. So what's the best tool box deal for under $1000? I've been searching the local Craigslist Adds and other classifieds with no luck so I might just buy new. So what are you guys using in that price range and are you happy with them?

The Red US General boxes from HF are worth a look. Many on here rave about them. You will have enough left over to buy a steak dinner on the way home. There are those that are totally against buying anything that is not made in America though that will trash them. Worth a look at in person at least.

Your Snappy dealer can't find you a good trade in for close to your price range for "$50.00 a week"??? lol

Everything on the truck is $50.00 a week.

Once you have a great box, you can't go back. Just go to Sears. Hang, slide, shake a drawer. Go to HF, repeat. Go to a "fleet & farm", do the same.

You're hooked and rite-fully so. Don't fight it. Don't settle for less.

I already pay the Snap-On guy an arm and a leg. I'm debating buying a knackk 112 job master for work and bringing the Snap-On home but the job master is $2500. I saw the thread on the 4 HF box work bench and for the price of $400 a piece they look appealing.

HF has the best bang for the buck. I have several and compared to my Craftsman roller ball combo unit they are equal or better in regards to quality and price.

There is some one here that did a pretty good in depth study of a few of the boxes, Sears, Lowes, TSC and I think HF won out. For the money I think the HF box is hard to beat. But you said you had about $1000. In our area you can get a pretty nice Mac, Snap on, Matco or Cornwell for that much. They have already depreciated where the box you buy at Sears or HF will be worth only half, once it is out the door. If you was in my area, I have a nice Snappy I probably let it go for that amount if you twisted my arm a little. I just bought a 2 year old Matco 72" wide box. The fellow who I got it off of paid over $6000 and I gave $2000. I serously considered buying two of the large HF boxes. ($1400) but the drawers werent as deep as the Matco. Still I question my self if I shouldnt went with the HF and had $500 left over.

Used tool truck brand or a Lista/Vidmar/Nu-Era. I see them often on Craigslist.

I have a used Mac double stack, a smaller Vidmar and a wide & deep Nu-Era. Paid $250 for the Vidmar and got the Nu-Era for free but see them often for under $1k.

I don't care how great others think the HF stuff is, it is not getting parked in my garage. Piss on HF ****.

I should think if you keep looking you can find something on Craigslist or at a tag sale - especially these days. I bought this one (behind dog) 10 years ago when the economy was still good at a tag sale in my neighborhood for $500. 54" Bluepoint, but better than Craftsman - guy was moving and didn't have room to bring it.

If you're patient and diligent one will find you. Remember - the asking or listed price is not usually the selling price.

Harbor Freight 44" top & bottom. Bottom regularly goes on sale $359, top has started going on sale once in a while at $269.

Best bang for the buck, period.

Only problem with the hf is the shallow drawer depth on their boxes.

The 56" HF Chest is pretty deep. Its not a 30 incher, but I believe its a little over 20" deep...For my home use, I find the 56" HF box to be more than sufficient. I did not want a 30" deep box because of space concerns.

As far as the area I live in I'm in Elko Nevada. I've been searching the Boise ID and SLC classifieds with no luck. There are quite a few deals on snap on and Mac boxes but again they are $2000-$4500 and for that I would rather buy the knackk box. My snap-on is a black w/ anodized blue drawers and stainless steel top and would look pretty nice in my home garage. I'm getting married in Hawaii in April and the wife also need a new car so the money is running thin at the moment. Ill be in Boise in two weeks and will check out the HF boxes... Everything being piled on top of the bench IS NOT working right now!
