Is this okay -wiring a ceiling fan

Hello:

Can I run 14/3 to a ceiling box for fan and light. The fan has separate circuits for the fan and light.

Wall switch box will have:

- incoming 14/2 white / black romex always hot
- outgoing 14/3 romex

Can I:

- pigtail incoming white to outgoing white on the 14/3 and connect to white wires for fan and light at ceiling box
- split incoming black to two switches at wall box
- connect outgoing black from switch one to black on 14/3 and connect to fan motor
- connect switch two to outgoing red on the 14/3 wire and run to light on fan fixture

Yes. If what you are saying is that you will be replacing the standard toggle switch with a fan switch. BUT you need to make sure the existing ceiling box can support a fan.

Not at all!!!! Rather, clear, concise, and to the point, using correct terminology. Best electrical post in months.

Now someone will parachute in with the suggestion that you cam buy a special switch and control box at the fan that allows all of that to happen with just two wires rather than three.... or a hand held remote control that does the same..... even though its clear that you know what YOU want to do...... and avoid stupid, failure prone electronics gadgets for the future.

This is exactly how all of my bedrooms are wired. It's very convenient to have the separate dedicated switches for fan and light.
