Vintage tools and prices

My father-in-law died 3 years ago and left us a mess. I'm in the process of finding a home for this stuff. I'm not sure how to price some of it. What should I ask for the following?

Tachometer

Collection of tap and dies. The large set is a Mores, the small set in the wooden box is a Greenway.

FWIW, I've bought those tap and die sets for $5 and seen them for sale for $75. The only way to know you're getting top dollar is throw it on eBay and see what happens.

If you just want it gone with the least effort, wait til warmer weather and have a widely advertised garage sale.

I'm in Zillah WA. I'm looking to sell them the most painless way as I have so much to go through. Her dad was 90 when he passed. He died as a hermit in a broken down trailer on an island in the Columbia river. He never threw anything away and just kept buying stuff. I might post some stuff here after I figure out a price.

The most painless way is to give them away. Im sorry to say this in your time of mourning, but here goes: you didn't buy them, so why sell them for money in your pocket? Sorry but this is a very tender spot for me. Id never get rid of my dads tools when i inherit them. Even though that would put me at 5 boxes, and over 2000 sockets. But i just cant get past how people get rid of stuff like that. I mean if you can get past it, more power to ya

Strange post. How would you feel about your wifes mothers dresses? Looks like the FIL left a lot of clean up behind, no reason to feel bad about selling the stuff he doesn't want or need. Be one thing if the wife said "This was my fathers pride and joy", would have a little more meaning. As for pricing, not really enough info about the tach, or the taps and dies, but that lot of taps and dies should be worth at least $100.

Id tell her to keep the wedding dress. The other dresses are clothes. Besides, totally different, dresses don't fix things, tools do. Now, i will stay out of this thread and let it be.

I agree, some things are worth keeping as you cannot replace "grandpa's tools" and even if you are not interested in them, possibly your children will be? (I wouldn't know, I barely have some of my dad's post divorce tools, and not one single tool of my grandfathers)

Some things are worth selling, but some you may have to pay to have hauled away, OR you can join the local Freecycle group(s) and for those items that don't have any real resale value, just nuance value, post them for free on Freecycle. Freecycle works on the "one mans trash is another's treasure (My son is picking up a pile of sand for an ongoing project tomorrow from a Freecycle "Doner"

(I do NOT recommend doing this on CL, as those types will often come in and take anything not nailed down, and some that are...)

It would not be a mistake to take pictures of EVERYTHING and post it here.

Ebay sets prices and sells items fast, but you do need to be a little ebay savvy.

Priority Mail flat rate boxes as long as the stuff inside is securely packed, are a great way to ship tools all over the USA.

i just inherited some of my grandfathers, and great grandfathers tools and I couldn't be prouder. some people in the family have no idea about tools, and probably would have just chucked them. I'd say hold on to some of them as a hand me down to future generations.

When you only have a few tools, like in the pictures, it is far more hassle than it is worth to try to sell than the money you'd actually get. But, in the process of selling, you might learn more about the tools -- and your father-in-law -- and start liking the tools.

...Hmmm. Hermit, lived in a broken down trailer, on an island, surrounded by stuff he couldn't live without. Many of us would call that a paradise. There's probably a sad back-story, though.

Sell all the tools in one fell swoop (or give them away to the person who cleans the rest of the stuff off the property -- tools to be taken last.)

i think i'd load up anything i thought may be of value ( montetary or sentimental) and get it out of where it's at.

then clean up / demo the property.

you or a relative may find something of true (sentimental) value after it's all over.

i inherited my dads tools, and his 2 guns when he passed away, never thout too much about any of his other "stuff"

the 2 things i now treasure are a little red tonka truck i gave him for one year, (cuz he talked about buying a truck, but never did), and the last liquor bottle he had a drink from, 2 weeks before he passed away.

it is worth place to get some vintage products at fair prices. So what new things are available now. Can you share some pics and other details ??

I'm still at it. I sold some things along with some of my junk. Rest assured, my wife is keeping some of his important personal belongings. What is being sold would be considered junk by most.

I did find a buried treasurs and I bet he never knew he had it. A 1939 Johnson Sea-Horse! This will sit in the living room of the new home were putting on his old river front property.
