I installed a new top on a workbench that the previous owner of the house left here. I just re-installed the vise he had here. Anyone know what kind of vise it is? I can't see any markings.

It's American Made, and has a big weld where the moving jaw meets the slide. As long as the weld seems solid, and you are not doing really heavy-duty stuff with it, it looks like a great vise! Nice score!

Prentiss? From the shape of the jaw inserts.

P.S. When I move, NONE of my vises are staying behind.

Rock Island for sure. Prentiss vises have a straight "eyebrow" above the operating handle. Rock islands are curved like the one you have pictured.

Check the Vises thread, i just posted pictures of a Rock Island 574 that is identical to yours.

I agree that it looks like Rock Island, but why no name?

This isn't the first time we've seen vises that we are quite certain who made them, but have no markings. (Chas Parker #8 (Maybe #7), comes to mind-no markings either)

That's because (I'd bet) all the Vise makers also made vises without marking for "House brand, companies to sell and may simply used a sticker instead.

I like the new workbench top, almost too pretty to be hammering stuff on. As for the vise, I do not know as much as others, but you got it for free, that is one more vise than I own.

Yeah I also second the idea of it being a Rock Island vise.

It's a Rock Island, or at least was made by them, without any doubt. As to why no name, who knows, but didn't Samson, among others like Craftsman, have Rock Island as an OEM at one point? Not sure if they all stamped theirs, especially on the smaller vises.

Edit:

That's because (I'd bet) all the Vise makers also made vises without marking for "House brand, companies to sell and may simply used a sticker instead.

Beat me to it!

Thanks!

I picked up 3/4 inch plywood. Cut it down. Stained. And polyurethane. If I did it over again, I would have cut it down so that there was a lip all around the edge. Probably would have looked way better that way.

I'm leaning towards a Prentiss. Catalyst will set us straight when he makes his entrance!

Damn, for plywood that looks real nice. Once I move out west at the end of the month I am going to be building a workbench, so I will keep your method in mind.

Good luck on the search for the vise info.

Whoever said Rock Island wins.

Found the markings of the name on the other side. Looks like the previous owner used the vice to paint things and it was camouflaged.
