$200 Rick Mears Edition Snap on Roller Cabinet. Good buy?

Was checking out some garage sales today and ran across a "Rick Mears" Snap On tool box. This box was definitely well used, but all the drawers are in decent shape, no major dents or dings. The Rollers seem smooth, with the exception of the bottom drawer, it comes out, but is a little "loose"

All the trim is in good shape, and he does have a key that works in both locks.

He is asking $200 for the set, but im thinking he will go lower.

Is this a chest worth buying and fixing up?

If anyone knows what model they are that would be extremely helpful

Thanks

He just let me walk away with it for $175 :)

I'll post up the model numbers once I get it scrubbed down and in the garage.

I would love to find one of those, especially at that price!!!
Looks like you even got the small personal items box on the top

Congratulations.

What state are you located in if you don't mind me asking?

$175 for all that is a straight up steal. That box in that condition is worth at least $300-400. If you restore it, I'd say it'll be worth double that. That's a decently large box.

Well Done! I've seen those advertised in comparable condition for $300-350.

Nice score. Any tool box that size for $200 is pretty good, and a SO for that price is even better.

I do have a question though, why does anybody care if it's a Rick Mears, Hulk Hogan or Bobby Bouche limited edition gold plated platinum only seen on TV tool box? Aren't they just used to store tools?

The entire box will be sandblasted down to bare metal, sprayed than cleared.

Looks like it will clean up nice for paint.

Please keep the pics coming!

I had the same model boxes 25 years ago (minus the Rick Mears graphics) and would love to find another set today.

That's always been one of my favourite boxes. You got a great deal. Good luck with the restoration and keep the pics coming.

Personally, I wouldn't go too crazy with sandblasting and repainting the insides of the cabinets. They seem to have cleaned up well and they should work well when you reassemble it. I'd concentrate on the drawers and outer surfaces.

Took a page from 67 Galaxies build and decided to get some "soak" rust remover.

what did you use to get the slides out? I have a 1971 kr59, one of the small drawers will not open 100%... tried several pics and other tools and have not been able to get drawer released

I looked for metal restore and evaporust but couldn't find any locally. Advanced auto had Wd40 "rust remover soak" for $24 a gallon. It was well worth the money, it saved me countless hours in labor and replacement parts. I had some old rusty files and other abused tools that I put in the solution. They came out rust free as well.

I actually used an old flattened out trigger guard from a Saiga rifle.

That box would have been at least $600 around here and probably a $1000. There's a 40" Craftsman Griplatch top and bottom on Craigslist right now for $2500 which is more than new price.

Looking at this tomorrow after work http://sarasota.craigslist.org/tls/3493165390.html I dont know how its been on CL for almost a month. The cart will make a nice detailing roll around cart once its cleaned up... As for the tools, Ill add them to the collection or pick out what i want and off load the rest.. everything is supposedly "warranty" tools. Hopefully there are a lot of SK sockets on those rails.

Good deal! A few years back I paid $300 for the top box alone. I really like that drawer layout. Hard to find in these parts, and I'm still looking for a KR557 roller to put it on.

While you are restoring a timeless tool storage artifact - others are watching mindless TV and think you are wasting your time.

Bully for you...

That's a screaming deal on collectible Snappy. I agree that others I've seen on CL rarely are under $600 to $800 and often in worse shape.

So tell us the story . . . . why was the prior owner selling??

Also, what part of the country. . . as February pics with green trees and lawn indicate maybe California??

Got pics of it all shined and wax'd up now??
