The krl1022 is the newest box and I do plan on keeping it . The kra5318 was my old box and was a good box but just to small even if I got a top box it still would be enough

Your a mobile electronics installer. 2 ways I knew. 1 was your username, only we know what mecp is. 2 was the bitwriter. Only we would recognize it. Be careful on here you will be getting blamed for vehicle electrical problems. Even though we know more about electrical systems than some mechanics. And there is a third that gave it away was your orginization.

yeah I am an installer, have been for years. I always forget about the bit writer i havn't used it in forever.i love the dealerships that blame aftermarket electronics for electrical issues, then we show up scanner and tools in hand and prove them wrong. just did it yesterday on a saturn ion at the local chevrolet dealer.

I have been an installer since 96. I now work for a manufacurer. I worked for a big box and owned my own shop. I do just remote starts and vehicle electrical trouble shooting and repairs. I rent a small garage to do some work out of and use for storage. I do some hot rods and wire them start to finish. That's some fun right there. Once these hot rod guys find someone they know and trust I will have work as long as they build cars. I actually went the ase route instead of mecp because the average person recognizes it. The a6 test is easier than the basic installer test.

yeah I stopped with the MECP certs and went with the AEAT in canada its basicly the same.

Does anyone know where to buy (website perhaps) generic organizational items for inside your tool boxes that are not brand specific? Like various size grip roll mats or foam that I can cutaway to fit specific tools?
I know some high end tool boxes come with this stuff but would love to buy from a website.

I was wondering what you could tell me about that case you are using for the drill bits. I really like it. I have been keeping a casual eye out for something like that for several months and I haven't found anything like what you have yet. Did it come with the bits or was it purchased separately?

mecpman....and how do you like your MaxiDAS scanner? I was just looking at that online today. Not alot of detailed description...just says it does everything.

Thanks for that link skulldrinker. That is a little bit expensive for me, mainly because I already have multiples of all of my commonly used drill bit sizes, so I wouldn't be getting a lot of value out of buying a bunch more. I resharpen my bits many times and rarely break them so I don't go through them very fast. I am hoping to ideally just find the case itself, but at least I am getting closer to finding what I am looking for. If I can't find a case by itself I might very well just buy the Grizzly set (or something like it) and then keep the case and sell at least half of the bit multiples on Ebay to recover some of my money.

for my drill bits i bought a tackle box similar to this http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12620707&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792 , but a bit longer/wider. it has customizable slots, to make it fit what you need & how you want it. the one i bought is a bit larger than the one you're looking at on amazon, i paid 17$ at cabelas.

Thanks, that is a good idea. I might look into those a bit and see what I can find. Cutting out slots for the longer bits is not a big deal and that would be a lot cheaper.
I mainly just want some sort of compact sectioned divider with room for a bunch of each size bit, so when I run across a bunch of drill bits for a couple bucks at a garage sale etc. I can just bring them home, sharpen them, size them, and drop them in the right section and be good to go. I don't like bit indexes for anything other than my portable tool set.

Yeah. I had to measure & cut 90 pieces to do it. I put it on each drawer front & drawer top. It's brushed titanium so i made sure the brush marks are the same way on each piece.
Took about 4 hours to do.
Here is a photo of the drawer top & u can see the brushed look in it.

I love it i just bought it. i had a snap on solus before and in my opinion the Autel kills it in everyway espesically for the price you pay for it.

What Solus did you have and what all do you use it for. I'm interested in the Autel as well but their isn't much information out there on them.

Autel was discussed recently in a DIY scanner thread here. The DS708 is a GREAT bang for the buck. Fully Bi-Directional and covers tons of modules. Check out YouTube, there are a few videos and reviews as well as on Autel's site.
I just bought a MD802 which is based on the DS708 software but its just a scanner and not Bi-Directional. I wish I could justify the $1,000 difference but I cant being a DIY'er.

My Homak Pro 27in Combo from Costco, I think I paid $499 Canadian. It seems to be built well, and is really heavy for the size. It has dual slides on the bottom drawers of both units.

I like this blue one from Canada, nice collection and you got what you need, there is about only one real thing to add and that is a method or 2 for power driving sockets but that may not be a big deal either.
There is some part of me that understands big collections but as a practical matter its moot. Its been driving me to strip out vs adding on, I am going to play a bit of mental ************ with a few tools but it wont need a down payment and at the cost I have in to some I can abandon or move to storage in the event I would need to gear up for some purpose.
There is a saturation level and as needs change so do tools. One of the threads I happened to glance thru reminded me of that, a guy has a view of himself from a long career and creates the same set for his home etc. Fully redundant all new,, great if its a hobby but I bet once he gets out of 70 hrs a week at work driving sockets at home wont be so much fun at 70 yrs old and will he likely brutalize a top end tool collection?
In a dynamic shop its hard to get enough of some tools while one set of other things could be shared over a career. A lot of investment sitting around waiting on an oportunity, my view of tools has changed dramatically over a career, both from the perspective of a buyer user and as a purchacer for others to use.
I try to look back and see if the fear matched the reality. Many professional mechanics waste about half their effort with this, its evidenced by large boxes full of stuff they rarely use that in the end cant get half what they paid while collecting right up till the end.
The other side is I got a WT Grant wrench or 2 still in service, no one thinks twice about using it still, in fact got a nice finish yet. In 1980 or so I bought a 6 pc flank drive off the truck, it was 75$, it has been worth it. In 73 when I was 12 or so maybe bought the Grant wrench set and it must have been well under 5 or so which was in a small town/city but the 5$ spent on those has been good to me too and you can still get about the same today in todays dollars but as good or better tool.

I have had guys send me stuff, ha, I got a box a while back from a forum guy who thought I might be able to utilize a bunch of stuff he was tossing, in fact I put some in a bucket but about a third was a good fit, so any time you guys got a few cheap combo wrenches you cant stand to toss send them and I will give em a home,, ha,, right now its 7/16 for some reason.

I can tell something else for a fact. That at this point in the game the new I need is very few and stripping out, going to less and focus on the frequency speeds it up way beyond adding new tools, the less is more theory does have a place in this biz. Not having to buy a new box and empty out some items I dont use is easier more productive and cheaper, takes up less space, costs less to insure, really puts very little drag on the whole deal with a little ergonomic organization.
