I agree with Zeke, probably staged. These "home inspection" photos have been floating around the web for ages, and most are so awful that you have to wonder if they are real or not.

Home inspectors tend to miss the important stuff, and instead, go for the easy, but stupid, unimportant stuff. I'll never use one again.

Not sure why the chimney picture was included. Doesn't look to be any missing bricks, can't see the lining well but it doesn't look to have pieces fall down the chimney either; no heavy creosote buildup and it looks fairly well cared for. Some missing mortar but if the outside is solid or gets re-pointed if it isn't then it certainly isn't ready to fall down.

Because there IS NO liner. A good fire in that chimney would set that house on fire in no time. That's one reason for a liner is to seal a lot of the voids. You look down that chimney you see cement block and brick. Hell of a no-no there.

What's sad is that a lot of the swinging dicks out there that own a hammer and call their self a contractor and end up with **** looking just like that. And a lot of the inspectors that do home inspection are worse.

When my son bought his house, he was 19 and dead set on buying a particular house. His mom and I was divorced and although he had spoke with me briefly about buying a house, he never let me know what he did until AFTER he signed for it. He gave me a call and wanted me to come up and look at what he bought. It wasn't too bad but the ones that owned it never took care of it. The first thing I noticed was the ceiling kitchen appeared to be wet. The second thing I noticed was that the bathroom toilet was right above the wet spot. The third thing I noticed was that the wall on either side of the toilet was damp and on the verge of rotting through but the toilet never leaked :scared: Whoever owned it before should have made the male portion of the family squat to pee. :eek7::puke:

The Home Inspector that my son hired passed everything except he told my son that he needed to put a baseboard heater in one bedroom. Everything else was in great shape. It took my son quite a bit to bring it up to adequate living standards.

Home inspectors around here a absolutely useless. The banks require them, and they are like ticks. They take your cash, test a few outlets, and give you a worthless report that doesn't give you an assurance. It is all caveats and statements that they aren't required to stand behind their evaluation at ALL.

The chimney may not have been sitting on a wood burning fireplace. It could have been for something else like a vent that was removed.

Just a bunch of sensationalist pics.

Looks not too different from the chimney on the 1881 house we're buying. The oil furnace and natural gas water heater dump into the common chimney and breaks it down. Just needs a stainless liner.
