That's my situation as well. Back in the day when I serviced medical electronics I didn't care a lot other than they worked well and were clean. More important was that I had what I needed at the moment. It wasn't until I came here that I now have a greater appreciation for tools, and their history.

I didn't vote because my vote would be erroneous to the poll. I sell tools now so most of mine are still in the package if new.

My tools are used but not bacon as a matter of fact covered in bacon, grease, lard,chicken fat,oil ,wax and just about anything you can think of to keep the rust at bay... As a matter of fact I keep them looking like dog **** all covered in grease that nobody wants to use them or better yet keep them!

for the most part all my "home" tools are clean, put away, and organized

"working" tools are covered in oil ( keeps rust at a minimum in a service truck), put away, and what most would consider a "disorganized mess"
kinda like cramming 100 lb's of sh*t, in a 1lb bag.

My work tools I am hard on, Large wrenches just get thrown in smaller stuff I put away and keep it orginized. My home tools I keep clean and I am gentle with them because I have beat up tools at work.

I work with mine. Don't polish them and I only wipe em off if they're really nasty (oil=ok). All day long the top of my box is cluttered, projects in mid-completion, and there's usually a drawer or three open with tools hanging out. But as the day winds down I always find the time to stow away my projects and restore order to my box. Groggily hunting for tools at 6 AM while trying simultaneously to get the plant up and running and NOT spilling coffee all myself can be a nightmare.

I'm retired now but when I turned wrenches for a living I used my tools to get the job done. I would just wipe them down at the end of the day. I did not know some of my tools were collectables at the time I bought them. I had a set of Bonney Wrenches that I really abused back in the day. Can you believe I took a torch to my Bonney 1-1/16 and 1-1/8" wrench because I needed a stubby wrench? I liked my Bonney Wrenches better than my Snap-On wrenches.
