Wilde Wednesday: Supporting a USA Company With Good Values

I wanted to use some quotes here from the Wilde website, but it seems to be infected with some malware at the moment.

A number of us are going to make a purchase of Wilde tools through Harry J. Epstein's this Wednesday, February 20th. There are a few reasons why this is an event worth participating in.

Wilde makes some really nice tools.

Epstein's is a great place to buy from (GREAT!) and they have terrific prices on Wilde products.

Wilde has an excellent philosophy and business model. They care about keeping Americans employed and don't outsource their production.

Wilde is a family-run business.


That's it in a nutshell. So, if you want to support TWO great family-owned and run American companies while showing your support for USA products and getting some nice tools for yourself, consider joining us. Any size purchase is fine, at any time on the 20th, midnight to midnight.

Just to be clear: there are some tools that Wilde sells that they don't actually make themselves. Those sockets might be one of them. Jori Sackin or someone else might know for sure.

Also, remember that Epstein's can get ANYTHING that Wilde makes, even if it isn't something they (Epstein's) normally stocks.

And some of those manufacturers (Craftsman, ahem) are moving offshore. That is no good for a company like Wilde. I think we need to get their name out there so people aren't strangers to the brand and we need to show them our support.

Have we figured out a way to work out mass custom orders with Epsteins? Im assuming quite a few of us are going to be interested in Wilde products that Epsteins doesnt normally carry in stock. I know they have shown a willingness to order anything we want from Wilde, but have we figured out how this will work out? I think it could turn out quite chaotic if we have a large amount of us trying to put in custom orders. I think we should do a little bit of coordination to make this a smooth process for everyone and avoid surprises.

Here are a few things to know.

1. Anything you guys want to special order, just let us know in the "comments" section when you checkout on our website. Wilde will deliver an order to us of all the stuff we don't normally stock. If you need a price on something we don't normally sell, PM me, but you should know that our prices will be the best ever.

2. We have bought a number of liquidation deals from Wilde over the years. These are listed in our closeouts section: http://store.harryepstein.com/c/WildeChrome.html. The first of these deals was when Wilde stopped chroming their pliers. The second deal was to clean out their warehouse of stuff that had been sitting around awhile.

3. Besides the closeouts, we also have a number of wilde tools in our catalog, mainly pliers, but lots of other stuff as well like the pry bars, etc. Here's a full not so organized list of the wilde tools we carry. 4. Not everything that says "Wilde" on it is made in the Wilde factory. Like every other US manufacturer they make some stuff and have other stuff private labeled (but still US made). They are a private labeler themselves for people like: Craftsman, Snap-On, Armstrong, etc.

5. Buying Wilde stuff is great, but telling people about Wilde is also really helpful to. For a long time Wilde has not tried to get their name out there because they've done so much business for Craftsman. Basically they didn't want to compete with their own tools. Now that Craftsman is not so slowly moving overseas, Wilde wants people to know that they were the ones making the great US quality tools all these years. Get their name out there. Let guys know about Wilde!

However, I found a problem with Epstein's website... simply searching "Wilde" does not provide a comprehensive listing of all Wilde products. It provides a list in apparently ascending order by price, only going as far as $15.20... I know there's more Wilde products, you have snap ring plier sets more than that. I think your website is limiting the length of search results.

I'm in -- good stuff, thanks for putting this together.

When quality is a given, I split vendors into these groups along with their priority when I purchase....

#4 - "The Sellouts" - Taking US/Euro-made quality names, outsourcing to China pretty much as their primary business model.

#3 - "Foreign" - Tawain/Asian made products of decent quality, not trying to be something they're not.

#2 - "Half-sold-out" - Still mostly US made stuff, but dipping their toe in the water with outsourcing, "in theory" to compete with the sellouts.

#1 - Pure US based manufacturers

Although their are massive gray areas spread across and inbetween those groups, you can never really go wrong purchasing in group #1! Especially when the price is lower, or extremely competitive.

You know, you are right. We did limit the amount of results. That's something we'll just have to work on in the future. We are in the process of updating the search/navigation of our site.

Because I am facing astronomical childcare costs next year (seriously, nuts!) I can't spend nearly as much as I'd like on this. I am unlikely to meet the free pliers minimum.
