I need a tool box or bag for the trunk of my car... I was looking at either going with metal, plastic, or a bag. I wanted a cantilever type box but I think it would be too heavy and a bad idea if it were to slide around.

I do spirited driving so I'd like something as stable as possible... with any possible ideas of building something to secure the tools. As much as I want a cantilever box, it doesn't sound like a good idea. I searched the forum but couldn't find anything related to being stable. If anyone can shoot me some ideas... that would be awesome.

I was looking at the similar options, considering one of those Hazet 190L cantilevers, but realized the same thing... the trunk of my M3 is not the best place to have one of those bouncing around.

Many years ago, my dad gave me a Crescent tool kit in a case that has been (unusually) used a lot over the years. Decent quality stuff, but not my main tools. They are perfect for trunk emergency kits, and come in a low-profile case. A couple of strips of the hook side of Velcro tape and it stays firmly planted on the fabric floor of my trunk. And outside of hammers or heavy tools, it has everything you could possibly need or want away from home.

Well, we need some more specifics. How many tools are you talking about? Are you talking about a few wrenchs for a breakdown, or a traveling tool box. The plastic box is great because it won't rust when it gets wet...inherently no matter what kind of car you own the trunk gets moisture in it sometimes. There are some waterproof tool bags, but I can't remember who makes them at the moment. Just a few more details and we can offer some suggestions.

I was actually considering the Hazet 190-2 or 190-3, they are made from plastic and are made in Germany! But don't know how that would hold up in the trunk.

Veto Pro Pac, nothing better.

I'll have to look into those...

Wrenches, ratchets, sockets... a good amount of tools. I don't think I've ever had issues with moisture in the trunk, but then again you never know... pesky moisture works it's way in anywhere. I wouldn't be too worried about waterproof or not though... more of a stability thing.

Low profile is the key for me. It's a matter of not worrying about a box or bag rolling around in the trunk banging into fenders from the inside or worse (my battery is in the trunk in the M3). I didn't want things sliding around or tipping over. The Crescent case is only a couple of inches tall wen lying down, and stays put with the Velcro hook on the bottom.

Go flat, go low profile, go plastic.

These are always decent options, too, if you want your own favorite brand in the box...

I would get something soft-sided, so you don't get a "thunk" every time you brake, accelerate, and turn.
