Tater reporting in with my 41" viper and side cabinet the top one is a montezuma almost identical to the viper. All are well made I like them more than the craftsman and I work at sears lol. The vipers have a better warranty and hold more per drawer

Finally was able to get all of the drawer pulls removed.

A GJ member who owns Viper boxes recommended I use an impact driver and diamond coated bit, but in the end it caused more damage than good. I stripped 4 machine screws using that method, after a failed attempt to try one of my better screwdrivers, a worn out, USA made older stanley philips screwdriver that did nothing but start stripping one of the screws.

Let me just say this, I will only buy high quality tools going forward. I purchased a set of Wera classic screw drivers and tried to use the bigger philips driver that came in the set and it worked just like a driver should, no stripping of the screws and I was able to remove all of the rest of the screws by hand. Some were still tough to get off, but the Wera never failed me. Having the right tool for the job really does make a difference. These Classic drivers work great and feel great in the hand too.

4 stripped screws had to be drilled out, really annoying too since the screws were only 6mm long. Now I have to buy a 4mm x.70 tap to fix two threaded holes in one drawer pull, I was a bit too aggressive(and tired) driliing out the stripped head on the second of the drawer pulls. Removing the drawers made a huge difference too, they come out very nicely. I really like these Viper boxes.

I also noticed something else interesting about the white Viper boxes. The white finish is actually a metallic finish, not just a plain white. There are metallic flakes that are more visible with an LED work light I hadn't noticed before, not sure if these are painted or powder coated.

I asked them for RAL codes on their boxes thinking that they were all powder coated, and was told that they are automotive paints with a metallic flake thrown in. All of their colors are metallic, and I never noticed it on any of them that I have seen in person. Very cool to know that even the white is a metallic, too.

Anxious to see how these turn out.

That's cool, except if you wanted to recoat a drawer to match for whatever reason you'd be SOL.

Thanks, I'm anxious to get the garage going too, I'll drop these off by the weekend.

Still trying to decide between a fine black texture on the pulls, or a high gloss wet black.

The caster hardware have to be done in the texture since the casting on those is really rough.

Neat little project. Looks like youre putting a lot of time and effort on such a small detail. It seems well thought out with the renderings and stuff.

I dont think I have that much patience and time to deal with those little things. Itll probably end up scratched and dented anyway and itll drive me crazy. I think i might steal the black castors idea and spray mine black.

Can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks, yeah, I'm particular once I have something nice to start out with, so I can't see damaging mine much at all. This isn't the first time I'm admitting I'm not normal and might have some issues. :D There are a handful of guys on this forum I've seen that are the same way.

BUMP for some updates. Just curious to see how the *aesthetics* are progressing.
$ for $, what's your take on the build quality, finish and or shelf rating.

No progress on the aesthetics just yet, concentrating on the boring must do's first such as insulation, sheetrock, attic plywood, new garage for w/ LM 3800, etc

Can't wait to get back on them. I've been putting together a better quality assortment of european and made in USA tools in the meantime I don't want to fil them with cheap chinese made tools, unless they're newer, I feel I need a few cheaper tools to use as loaners or told I don't mind beating up good. Husky tools aren't bad with the lifetime no questions asked warranty, they've served me ok depending on the tool.

The Viper boxes are tucked away in the corner of my garage in the original cardboard boxes for protection since there is a lot of messy work going on in the garage.

Thanks for all the great pics, ever finish your custom colorings? I just ordered the 41-inch top and bottom in their ARMOR motif, the pictures on the internet make the handles seem a gothic-dark-grey, but I'm not sure if they're just plain aluminum or what. I'm really excited though. I was thinking about murdering them out, all black, but I'm wary after reading your issues with stripping the screws out. This is my first "real" tool storage, wider than 26-inch, so my longer tools will finally have a home. I'm so stoked! Thanks for all the details!

One question, are the locks those round tumblers that can be picked with a Bic pen? I was hoping they'd be "normal" flat keys, also easier to carry on the keychain, but it's not a deal-breaker if they're round, just hope I can change them out.

I just bought a 41" top/bottom as well a few months ago. To answer your question, yes the keys are the round tumbler ones.

Thank you for that info

These pictures worry me. It looks like the drawers are pushed in further along the left side (except for the bottom one). The left edge seems to sit too deep in the frame on those drawers. That would be grounds for return in my honest opinion. I have el-cheapo boxes from Husky, Kobalt, and Craftsman, and all of them are perfectly flush in this regard. :dunno:

I'm back and starting to concentrate on my garage now. Took some time off from the garage as I had other priorities happen unfortunately.

Damn, I'm surprised I didn't notice this, I usually don't miss something like that. Not sure if that's the case or if it's an illusion from the sun and shadows. I still have them in their original boxes packed away. Hoping the have the parts powder coated in dark grey/ black and set up this winter.

Hey GSMotorrad, I asked the folks at Viper about the issue you were explaining in the pics and apparently it's a non issue. If the drawers are indeed uneven it would be caused by the drawer slide detents that can be adjusted that should allow me to make all sides sit flush.

they still look sweet

can't wait to see pics of the finished garage

Thanks bobbycos. I spent quite a bit of time organizing all of my powertools, fasteners and misc items in all those cabinets, and my garage looks like it hasn't been touched at all. Everytime I walk in there I get anxiety. Hoping to make a big dent in the mess that my garage has become tomorrow morning.

Handles on the large cabinets were temporary just so I can open the doors easier, those are the ones that came with the cabinets from Amazon. I think I have longer ones for those tall cabinets I ordered. I ordered a bunch o that same style handle in varying lengths depending on how tall a cabinet door was.

Wow, crown molding in a garage of all places. I've seen it all now lol. Viper makes good cabinets, I bought a stainless one last year and the fit and finish is really good.

Have any photos of your box to share?

Powdercoated drawer pulls, side handles and all my cabinet pulls will be completed this week.

Started organizing all of my cabinets and powertools.

Purchased larger 6" casters for the four Viper boxes. They originally had chrome Cornwell wheel covers on them, I removed them for the all black look I was going for. Only issue is the smaller 26" boxes might be an inch too tall now and won't fit under my work bench. I'll have to raise the bench somehow. It's no longer adjustable.

The wheels are super nice. Even the axle bolts have zerk grease fittings on them.

I love the drawer layout on the 41" cabinet. I recently picked up a mini white viper box at Sears for my reloading bench to have a few tools close by and love it!

Finally cleaned up the garage, got all my powder coated cabinet and drawer pulls back and got two of my smaller Vipers set up.

Just need black cam locks.

Wow! White wouldn't be my first choice but I really like the contrast brought on by your black accents. It is a sharp looking combination!
