They were reasonable, not cheap. In 1968 I went to work at the Post Office as a truck mechanic @ $3.15 per hr.

"Cheap" is relative --- consider that prices, and the average wage were much lower in the 60's and 70's. I made $9.00/hr, and my new '72 MGB cost less than $3000. That said, at the time SK was sold through many local auto parts stores as their "house brand"; so finding a great SK sale was quite common.

I purchased two SK 13pc 1/2" drive chrome socket sets (metric and SAE) in sturdy metal trays for $14.00 each. I had been looking for a quite a while to get some nice sets for home use. I recall that similar Craftsman and Wards Powrkraft sets were selling in the mid-$20 range; so the SK sets were a great deal.

Here is a Action brand set made by thorsen. All the sockets are stamped thorsen, the case, ratchet and handle are stamped Action. This is the way it came new not sure why.

Thats funny about SK, because now, it seems to me SK is priced waaaayyy, above Craftsman and other typical consumer grade tool brands.... the USA ones that are left, which isn't much!

IMO I think they are trying to compete with the truck brands.

I think it is great that the price is still on there. It dates it and is a piece of history in itself.

I bought the sk sets back in the 80's at a mom & pop hardware store. They where closing and liquidating everything. I remember asking the old man if he had any socket sets and he went in the back and returned with these. They have been in a cabinet in my basement for close to twenty years and I just recently found them again.

The sets look 70's to me too.
I looked up A.J. Foyt and Wood Bros and they were both active from the 60's to the 90's.
Dresser Industries on the tag makes them after the S-K Wayne period and before Facom ( 1969 to 1985 ? ).
Top condition sets. !
