1/2" ratchet

bought 1/2 " ratchet from napa in the early 90's late 80's w/ lifetime waranty
#873110 and these guys won't honor the warranty , any ideas?

I just moved one in to storage, had it done and its about like a Sears, its the same chassis with a polish job. Don't know what the answer is other than to send it back to China via the scrap barrel, buy a HF deal and call it a day. I got a couple I am throughly disappointed in.

Why won't they honor the warranty? What are the warranty obligations? Are you asking them to warranty something that is not covered by the warranty? Did you abuse the tool or did it fail due to production or design flaw?

I personally think that a ratchet bought in the early 90's or late 80's should not be warranted. After that long I think you should just buy a new one.

I got 2 of them aint got an hours worth between them 20 yrs old not worth a darn. This comes from someone that can live on a diet of 1.50 end wrenches.

Sears agreed to warranty my ratchet I bought in 1979. I didnt want a Chinese one so i found a part and fixed it. SK sent me a rebuild kit for my SK ratchet that I bought around 1983. It is just like brand new again. They both had lifetime warranties and I am still alive. So, why should I buy a new one instead? Don't get me wrong, I've bought new ones because I liked them, (Armstrong aerospace, etc. )not because a lifetime one failed.

I am not a warranty abuser by any stretch of the imagination but WTH? What does the date of purchase have to do with it when it is a lifetime warranty?

I broke the selector lever of my 1/2" Snap on I bought in 1990 a few months ago. I guess I should have just scrapped it and bought a new one?

The fine print of some "lifetime" warranty terms might define that word as being something less than "until the day you die" or "forever and ever and ever."

I see Haukur's point. He probably means that a twenty-five year old ratchet that you paid $30 for has given you your money's worth.

From a legalistic standpoint, I'd want to see what the terms of the warranty were. From a personal standpoint, I almost never warranty old tools that have given their all and then crapped out decades later.

I don't judge anyone who does.

Napa tools use to be made by Danaher I think, but their new Taiwan tools are now made by somebody else, so they are not warranting any of the old stuff, even the old "New Britian" stuff, and that was LT warranted too.

I have several Snap-On tools, that I have purchased in the 80's. I am not a pro-wrencher, and to be perfectly honest I do not feel that I have gotten my full monies worth out of those tools to date.
I have broken extremely few of them (I never abuse them!), but if another breaks, I expect a full replacement.
I don't see it as the age of the tool, I see it more as the use, and I'm sorry to say, I have seen more "Professionals" abuse their tools, then guys like me.

I work part-time at the local NAPA (fill in as needed on Saturdays, about once a month or so). I specifically asked the manager about warranty on the old tools when the Carlyle tools came out. He said all the old NAPA tools would be replaced with the equivalent Carlyle tool as they came in for warranty. IOW, lifetime warranty still in effect.

Take it to another NAPA. A lifetime warranty is a lifetime warranty. Period.

Usually, they are warrantied for "life" against defect in material and/or workmanship. If you use a ratchet for 25 years.........or 5 years for that matter......and it gets worn out.....is it still defective? The handle didn't crack......usually its bent from a cheater. The gearing will "wear out" but its like "lifetime" brake pads that you paid $30.00 for. Its a given that they will eventually wear out....but because they "wore out" only proves that they weren't defective.

The NAPA's are not owned by corporate and each one seems to deal with things that way they want to; many times it is who is working the counter or the attitude the owner has about things. I've also noticed; that if you have a commercial account, they give you more leeway or service, then if you are just someone walking in off the street. As noted; try a different store or contact NAPA corporate.

When i got done they would warrenty it. I would throw a fit and if that did not work then i would stand in front of the door and tell everyone napa parts are **** !!

If its one of those Danaher style ratchets, you could just swap the stripped out head into a matco or crafstman handle and trade it in for warranty that way

The two NAPA stores closest to me both stink. They sell me stuff, but if your not a regular from a garage treatment can get pretty second class. Neither one ever has any promo items except for the garage customers.

I would contact NAPA through the web site. The ratchet should be replaced with a NAPA Carlyle ratchet. My NAPA auto parts dealer does not carry the new Carlyle Tools so this could be the problem you are having.
