This coupon gets you a free (super cheapo) screwdriver set and a 15% off single item discount.

Default link is to "coupon2" for me. The other codes were provided/deciphered by danglerb.

Coupon expires on the 7th.

Hey, free is free. People are syaing that these sell for between $1 and $2, so save the gas money unless you're planning to head there anyways.

On a side note, there's FINALLY a horror freight within driving distance of me! I'm eager to head in to see what I'm not missing out on! I would have went today, but I'm a bit sick and not in the mood to be horrified by low-quality crappy steel imports.

I think you would be suprised with some of the Pittsburg professional tools but with the attitude you have why even bother going? :headscrat

I was thinking the same thing. The first time I went I was disgusted. I drove 45 mins to look at this junk? BUT, a few hand tools, and the tool boxes surprised me. I still may buy the shear knock-off, but they raised the price on it.

I will go there just because I now can, and because I have a slightly open mind. I'll give them HF tools the benefit of doubt.

Like I said, the tool boxes and full polish wrenches may surprise you. I think you will laugh at those free screwdrivers though. If I had them I would seriously consider grinding a few of the tips down and using them as alignment tools.

The free set would do just fine for a loaner box, or emergency road box or the like. Of course not for my regular use box.

A little tip on the free screwdrivers: they're selling the same six-piece set for $1.29. They're barely worth that.

I took the coupon to my local HF (Ypsilanti!) and the clerk told me the coupon was "from a different district." As such, they would not give me the free-set pictured, but a different six-piece set that is actually of even lower quality.

The 15% might be worth it if you're going in for a big item. Don't waste a trip for the screwdrivers.

I did a little surgery on the link, comes up with a directory that lists three coupons that "look" the same, but have different codes. Maybe print out all three and see which works?

http://www.harborfreightusa.com/TV

or links to all three directly;

http://www.harborfreightusa.com/TV/coupon3.html

Shopping at HF is no different than buying bananas at the grocery store. You go in, look over the bananas, skip the bad ones, maybe buy some nice looking ones, maybe no bananas that day.

HF has a few gems, in a field of chaff. Kind of like searching for diamonds in that Arkansas state park.

That said, my father has bought screwdrivers and nutdrivers from them before, for his portable stuff. He was using them outside on a hot and sunny day, and the handles started melting, and the nutdrivers then spun in their handles (and tried to stick to his hands).
From what I have seen from these, chaff.

I'm sure they're good for things like punching holes in oil filters before removing them (something I read in a trade magazine but haven't tried yet..... guess I don't mind getting my hands dirty)

I had a HF open a couple of miles from me and have bought several items from them. Some were complete junk like the 10 compound miter saw and palm sander, but they took them back without a fuss. The 12 compound miter saw, 3 and 2 hp air compressor, grinder, dotco, Pittsburg professional wrenches, impact sockets are some of the items that for a homeowner I've had good luck with. I largely buy stuff from them now that is on sale that I figure I will only need once in a while and it has paid off for me also. Just remember some of it is junk and some isn't half bad. They've always honored sale prices off the internet for me also.

I've tried using a centre punchto make a hole in the filter to drain out the oil before removing oil filters, it's just as messey as any other method out there. If you're taliking about hammering a screwdriver through the filter to remove it, it works great!

not all the time, Moose you know the evil that is Rover. You know the owners.

8 out of 10 times I have had to hammer through rip the actual shell off the filters base then knock what was left off!

Other filters normally just tear a bit then go, some go with your hand, its your donald duck really.

Yspilanti??? That's my local HF. Which clerk told you that?

You guys don't like the screwdrivers??? Even with your beloved Snap On hard-grip knock-off handles????:spit:

Sorry... even I couldn't keep a straight face for that one.... :bounce:

+1

I've had very good luck with several HF items and they have lasted for years.

Their Taiwanese 14" 4-speed wood bandsaw has seen more lumber and aluminum plate than I care to remember -- it's a keeper.

Their 12" sliding compound miter saw was bought years ago for one project and has been used regularly for years without even a blade change. It's been the most useful tool

Orange paddle switch 4.5" grinders are on paar with Asian Dewalt and Ryobi grinders -- they have performed way above expectation. Never had one fail -- and I have some models that are over 10 years old.

The venerable 4x6" metal cutting bandsaw has sliced metal stock for 10 years with only a few bi-metal blade changes.

You can knock HF quality, but I'll stand by these tools; they are worth twice what I paid for them, and even at that price they are still cheaper than the name brands.

I like going there for the tools the deplete over time. The latex work gloves, paint brushes, cutting wheels, tool oil, sanding paper, etc. Hard tools, not so much.
I bought a breaker bar there that broke, so at least they live up to their title.

Anyway, its all about the replenishables.

I'm with GoodFellow -

I can't knock HF - they sell cheap tools for cheap. I don't think they mis-market or mislead in their ads. People in the market for a ________ (insert tool) have a general idea what they should be paying. HF will have that tool (off-branded of course) below that price.

I have the 40'' tool chest, and love it. Well worth the price, especially with the 15% off coupons. I have the Hanson-ish socket tray and love them too.

I've got a handful of their cheap air tools for various small projects - cut-off tool, die granders, etc. I haven't broke one yet but aren't used much. I've also regularly used their $10 HVLP paint gun for a variety of projects, and is well worth the price!

I've even played around with the $99 MIG welder, and it does actually weld metal (as long as you buy quality wire)

Replenishables are great there also. I've used lots of the Paint Brushes, cutting wheels, and diamond-tipped circular saw blades as well.

Harbor Freight is what it is. Half the fun is watching the flyers and coupons and trying to catch stuff when it goes on sale. That being said, yes some of their tools are total junk. The Pittsburgh Professional series is usually good stuff though. What I have noticed in the past year or so though, is that the quality on some items is getting better and the prices are starting to come up a little too. If you look closely at the tools, you can see differences in quality. The stuff from Taiwan seems to be the best, but China quality is coming up too. The stuff from India is pretty poor, but I do have two sets of high polish wrenches at work in our community tool box that are holding up pretty well. You guys know what to look for in quality, there are some items at HF that are decent quality.

How do you guys get on the mailer sales catalog? Have they
quit sending them?

I've gone to their website and put my name and address in for
a free catalog at least 3 times over the past year to no avail.

I've been pleasantly surprised by HF's nitrile gloves. The gloves aren't bad at all, and size XL actually is XL - I have meat hooks for hands. I HATE it when a package of gloves says "One size fits all".
NO, one size does NOT fit all!

I have the Hanson-ish socket tray and love them too.

Do you have the 1/2" size? If so, I don't believe it is possible to fit the larger sockets on the tray. The studs are too close together and the tray isn't wide enough. Floors me how stupid the designer had to be.
