A funny thought came to mind while playing with my nuts...

... and bolts in the garage today. Back in high school shop class, the bolt bucket was punishment for in-class antics. Of course you wouldn't get the bucket on theory days, the teacher would save it for practical days.

And here I sit on a lazy Sunday afternoon thinking 'there's nothing better than sorting through your bolt bucket while listening to tunes'.

Was the bolt bucket a means of punishment for anyone else?

There was always a couple buckets (about the size of a foot bath) with miscellaneous nuts, bolts, washers of every size to be sorted and put away in the correct bins.

It was torture than but so relaxing now!

Similar deal at my school but they were filled with sand. You had to walk the perimiter of the parking lot while carrying two of them.

No, but I do buy the $2.00 boxes of misc. **** at auctions to sort during the winter.

The students can't be "punished" anymore. But the bolt bucket will keep em busy now and then. Along with any other sorting jobs.

We didn't have one for punishment but we did have one for finals test. The instructor would pull a bolt or nut from a box and we had to identify by proper head type, length and thread all by eye or hand. He also had a pile of camshafts and we had to identify the number of cylinders and the rotation direction of the cam.

My metalwork shop teacher had his own form of punishment, he got hold of an old shotputt, a length of hefty chain and made a shackle to create his own old style ball and chain, the perpetrator of whatever heinous crime committed would get their ankle padlocked in said device for the rest of the lesson, the ****** also made the chain just too short to walk around stood straight whilst carrying your ball forcing you to stoop, it was murder on the back! It was all done with good humour though and weirdly all the kids loved him, back then corporal punishment was still allowed and he had a cut down gym shoe that had regular meetings with unruly backsides, as he was a golfer he had a mean swing on him I can tell you from experience. Stood bent over in front of the class whilst he took a couple of practise swings behind you was probably the worst part as you never knew quite when it was coming, he would often also write things like "ouch" backwards in chalk on the sole so it ended up transferred to the seat of your pants!

Although I had never heard of it as punishment, it sounds like a good idea, especially if they are old and greasy/grimy bolts.

There were other sorting/cleaning duties as well. We thought of it as punishment but looking back, it was more of a learning tool and helped to keep the shop organized. It was a lot more useful than demoralizing, harming or detaining a student.
I was the benefactor of the grand-daddy of all punishments when I swung a drop cord and it busted a fluorescent light... glass and dust all over a student. I had to drain (guessing 180 gal) varsol tank with buckets/funnel/ into drums and clean the sludge from the bottom. I was about half done after 3 practical classes when the teacher pulled me off the job because somebody else pulled a tank-worthy stunt.

I agree in theory but yet I still have a bunch of drywall screws in good condition from tooo many years ago when I removed drywall screws that held the plush orange velvet walls in a 1980 Dodge shaggin' wagon. I did however finally get rid of a '76 360 Interceptor oil pan (complete with windage tray) and rocker shaft and arms when we moved. Although, I still have all the bolts from that engine.

The short chain is hilarious but the humour stops at physical contact for me. Grade 5 saw a kid break his arm as a teacher dragged him over a desk. A haunting site and sound. I had a welt under my eye for a couple days where my teacher threw a piece of chalk at the kid next to me and missed. My shop teacher could express his anger without hurting anyone. Creative vs. Corporal punishment. Teachers are hand-cuffed today and often the 'innocent' students share in the punishment as a group so as not to center anyone out for misbehavior.

Punishment? My bolt bucket is the last resort before a trip to the hardware aisle. You haven't gone though the entire inventory until the 2 or 3 bolt buckets are dumped and scanned.

Our shop teacher didn't use a bolt bucket as a threat. He used a wood vice and a piece of balsa. Put the balsa in the vice and slammed it shut with splinters flying everywhere, then stating "Your fingers if you screw up or hurt somebody". Drop and give me 20 was for minor infractions. PS - he was ex-marine. We got along fine, nowadays the school would get sued.
